The LAR Peer Leader program provides opportunities for upper-class students to guide, educate, and support new incoming first-year students in becoming successful at Doane University. Peer leaders promote student belonging, both within the classroom and throughout the university, using past experiences to encourage meaningful learning practices for students. Peer mentorship can create feelings of connection between campus and community, higher GPA, and increase long-term persistence rates on college campuses (Colvin & Ashman, 2010).
The LAR Peer Leader plays various roles in the first-year transition at Doane University.
As a member of the Orientation Team, the LAR Peer Leader assists with all aspects of Orientation activities and works closely with their LAR class to develop community and a connection to campus.
As Peer Leader in the LAR 101 course, PLs will be a member of a teaching team for first-year students and assist the LAR faculty member. The Peer Leader will support the LAR instructor in providing academic assistance, and duties may include, but are not limited to, facilitating in-class activities, taking attendance, giving instruction, attending out-of-class speakers/events, individual/group tutoring or study sessions, and role modeling for students in and out of class.
The Peer Leader supports students with college transition issues and provides activities to support a sense of belonging, wellness, social engagement, and professional development. Peer Leaders will use mindfulness exercises, take the students to campus events, assist students with scheduling meetings (advising, career services, and academic support resources, etc.), help with intellectual challenges, and direct support during class scheduling periods.

General Description and Duties
- Enroll and attend LAR 301L, the LAR Peer Leader seminar, bi-weekly one-hour planning and reporting seminar with PL team and the Director of Academic Advising.
- Meet with LAR faculty weekly.
- Participate in all Orientation activities (as needed), including OL training and Enrollment Days.
- Under the direction of the LAR faculty member, provide instruction for LAR 101.
- Assist the Academic Advising Team with retention/transition activities, including but not limited to: regular communication with students in their LAR section, 30 points of contact with students, plus gathering retention/transition/evaluation information.
- Take students to campus events and the Pathways Majors Fair.
- Serve as a resource for professional development and course selection process.
- Foster a positive relationship with each student in their LAR section, and serve as an academic and personal role model and resource.
- Communicate with faculty and staff about any circumstances that may impact the LAR student’s ability to be successful.

Special Skills or Knowledge Required
- Strong Academic Record – academic and disciplinary records will be checked
- All applicants must attend one of the interview sessions. You will be notified via email of the interview sessions and sign-up
- Sound ethical and role modeling skills, as demonstrated in part by student judicial record
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, both in groups and one-on-one
- Commitment to the success of first-year students at Doane University
- A one-year commitment is strongly preferred.

Total Weekly Hours Required
Fall: average 6 - 8 hours per week. LAR 301L graded credit option and stipend ($400 for Fall)
