Fall 2025The LAR Peer Leader program provides opportunities for upper-class students to guide, educate, and support new incoming first-year students in becoming successful at Doane University. Peer leaders promote student belonging, both within the classroom and throughout the university, using past experiences to encourage meaningful learning practices for students. Peer mentorship can create feelings of connection between campus and community, higher GPA, and increase long-term persistence rates on college campuses (Colvin & Ashman, 2010).The LAR Peer Leader plays various roles in the first-year transition at Doane University.As a member of the Orientation Team, the LAR Peer Leader assists with all aspects of Orientation activities and works closely with their LAR class to develop community and a connection to campus.As Peer Leader in the LAR 101 course, PLs will be a member of a teaching team for first-year students and assist the LAR faculty member. The Peer Leader will support the LAR instructor in providing academic assistance, and duties may include, but are not limited to, facilitating in-class activities, taking attendance, giving instruction, attending out-of-class speakers/events, individual/group tutoring or study sessions, and role modeling for students in and out of class.The Peer Leader supports students with college transition issues and provides activities to support a sense of belonging, wellness, social engagement, and professional development. Peer Leaders will use mindfulness exercises, take the students to campus events, assist students with scheduling meetings (advising, career services, and academic support resources, etc.), help with intellectual challenges, and direct support during class scheduling periods.
