Job Title: K-8 Media Specialist

Job Summary:
The K-8 Media Specialist (Librarian) plays a vital role in fostering a culture of literacy, inquiry, and digital citizenship within the school community. The Media Specialist collaborates with teachers, integrates technology, curates and maintains a diverse collection of resources, and provides instruction in research skills, media literacy, and information technology.
Key Responsibilities:1. Library/Media Program Development and Management
- Maintain and extend the library collection according to district guidelines and curriculum needs.
- Develop and implement a library/media program aligned with school goals.
- Organize the physical library space for accessibility, efficiency, and engagement.
- Manage circulation, cataloging, and inventory of library resources.
2. Instruction and Collaboration
- Collaborate with teachers to design and implement instructional units that integrate literacy and technology.
- Teach students research skills, digital literacy, and ethical use of information.
- Foster a love for reading by promoting diverse literature and literacy programs.
- Provide professional development for staff in media resources and instructional technology.
3. Technology Integration and Digital Citizenship
- Assist students and staff in the effective use of educational technology and digital tools.
- Support safe and responsible digital citizenship through instruction and policy implementation.
4. Community and Professional Engagement
- Engage in outreach efforts to parents and the community to promote literacy and library services.
- Maintain relationships with external libraries and educational organizations.
- Participate actively in professional development and contribute to the field through conferences and workshops.
5. Administrative Responsibilities
- Develop and manage library/media budgets, ensuring responsible resource allocation.
- Prepare and submit reports related to library/media program effectiveness.
- Ensure compliance with copyright laws and advocate for ethical information use.
Qualifications:
- Education: Master's degree in Library Science, Media Studies, or a related field preferred.
- Certification: Valid state certification as a School Librarian/Media Specialist.
- Experience: Experience in a school library setting preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of children's and young adult literature.
- Familiarity with library management systems and instructional technology.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, students, and community members.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
