WIC PROGRAM ASSISTANT I
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Lactation Support Coordinator. The Program Assistant I perform receptionist responsibilities as well as program income and address eligibility determination, with front office duties, within Lake County.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Administration (25%)
- Fax out WIC calendar to agencies.
- Maintain form supply, copy, update, prepare for outside printing.
- Maintain card stock security.
- Performs regular copier and printer maintenance as needed, ordering copier supplies within maintenance agreements.
- Uses messaging capabilities.
- Maintains records for three years.
- Attends trainings as appropriate.
- Supports the Agency Safety Program.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of position classification.
Client Services (70%)
- Receives screens, refers incoming telephone calls and visitors; take messages, give information, and schedule appointments.
- Works with WIC participants at various clinic sites as needed, assess initial participant information, screen for eligibility, create a client file, schedule appointments, assess paperwork for completeness, reissue benefits, and give program information.
- Maintains card stock security.
- Determines income and address eligibility for program participation. Documents information in WIC WISE.
- Prepares staff meeting notes, business correspondence, reports, press releases, special projects, forms, and fliers.
- Maintains a stamped supply of WIC referral, outreach forms, and nutrition education supplies.
- Posts and maintains the E Center WIC Facebook page – with supervision.
- Conducts program outreach activities and Farmers Market outreach.
- Assists with office clerical duties as assigned including appointment reminder telephone calls, setting messaging service, and sending post cards.
- Travels to satellite WIC clinics to provide full scope of WIC services to eligible Lake County residents.
- Attends monthly staff development meetings and staff in –service programs.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of the position classification.

- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, participants and the public.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to program staff and participants.
Breastfeeding Education and Support (5%)
- Regularly works in a manner that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding. Encourages breastfeeding as the norm for infant feeding.
- Uses appropriate breastfeeding language and refers participants to breastfeeding resources as needed.
- Attends breastfeeding meetings, conferences, and professional educational trainings as authorized.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of position classification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma; Associate degree or higher preferred.
- Must have proficient skills in Microsoft office applications and the ability to learn additional data entry software. Perform general clerical support as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from participants, employees of the organization, and the general public.
- Bilingual/bi-literate (English/Spanish) Preferred.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in a written, oral, diagram, or schedule from.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possession of a valid California drivers' license; current personal vehicle insurance or safe driving record sufficient to ensure insurability through Agency policy.
- State regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis test, and verified fingerprint and criminal record clearance before beginning work
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell.
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
