Title - Controller

Location - Foothill Ranch, CA 92610 - no relocation offered

Salary - $110,000 - $125,000

Summary:

Following established procedures and under the direction of the CFO, responsible for maintaining and improving the operational efficiency of the accounting department. Ensures financial reporting accuracy in compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulatory requirements. Executes change and supports automation when necessary. Enhances the timeliness and quality of work product, enabling the accounting department to support the Credit Union's growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages accounting operations, encompassing accounts payable, fixed asset accounting, loan accounting, general ledger management, and the month-end close process.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including the preparation and submission of tax filings.
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements process improvements to streamline accounting functions.
  • Develops, documents, and maintains accounting policies and internal controls to ensure accuracy, compliance, and risk mitigation.
  • Leads internal and external audits by preparing necessary documentation.
  • Mentors and develops accounting staff, providing training and professional growth opportunities to build a high-performing team.
  • Stays current with changes in accounting regulations and industry best practices to maintain compliance and drive innovation
  • Remains informed about Credit Union products, services, procedures, recent developments, and competitive offerings. Collaborates with various departments to achieve Credit Union objectives, gather and analyze data, and optimize processes.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and ability in core competencies as required for the position. Actively pursues opportunities to expand skills and expertise through training, seminars, and professional networking. Supports Credit Union goals and objectives and actively participates in training sessions and special promotions.
  • All other duties as may be assigned.

Education/Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; CPA certification is preferred. Candidates must have proven experience in both technical and operational accounting, with a minimum of three years in a managerial capacity. A strong understanding of GAAP and experience in preparing financial statements are essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership abilities, including mentoring and developing teams, fostering collaboration, and driving process improvements. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills are necessary to manage competing priorities and support strategic decision-making. Experience in the financial industry is preferred.

Language Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of members or employees of the organization.

Math Ability: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills: Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel. Knowledge of Symitar preferred.

Certificates and Licenses: CPA certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Light supervision includes training staff analyst and reviewing their work.
