What We Are Looking For

ODF is looking for a Natural Resource Specialist 2 - Stewardship Forester to Administer the Forest Resources program within the Klamath Unit, with an emphasis on administering all components and compliance with the Oregon Forest Practices Act, primarily for large forestland owners, with assistance to small forestland owners as needed. These goals and related duties are in the areas of:

  • Administration which includes helping landowners attain their objectives and providing for the societal values of the citizens of this state by offering information and assistance that encourages long term investments in sustainable forest management activities that are consistent with sound management of soil, air, water, fish and wildlife resources.
  • Enforcement of statutes, rules, programs, policies, incentives and opportunities that relate to: Oregon Forest Practices Act; reforestation; cost share funding; fire protection; the Forest Resource Trust; integrated pest management; resource protection; and best management practices to maintain water quality and wildlife habitat. Many aspects of sound and compliant forest management are achieved through the processing and support to Notification of Operation and other documents submitted via the FERNS system.
  • Administering and coordinating various federal, state, local and non-profit grant and partnership activities on the Unit, which may extend to impact the District. This includes coordinating with various affected/interested landowners and partners (internal and external) to ensure the most effective and efficient use of funds.
  • Conducting various educational activities to communicate opportunities and ascertain interest from landowners.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience in forestry or a closely related natural resource program, AND a bachelor's degree in forestry or a closely related natural resource program, or three additional years of related (pertinent) experience;

OR

one year of experience in forestry or a closely related natural resource program, AND a master's degree in forestry or a closely related natural resource program;

OR

a Doctorate degree in forestry or a closely related natural resource program.

Note: Driver's License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver's license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Working knowledge of forest management technology and recommended best management practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills including working with operators, landowners, and the public in communicating technical information and prescriptive standards.
  • Experience providing education and outreach to a variety of users such as landowners, operators, small woodland owners, and other agencies in classroom/workshop and/or field tour settings etc.
  • Experience or education in using GIS to create project maps, especially use of ArcPro or ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience in the layout and preparation of timber sales, including experience in sale boundary posting, timber cruising, timber appraisal and timber sale contract preparation and administration.
