Job Title: Professional Learning Coordinator & Literacy Coach
Department: Professional Learning
Education Level and Certification: Bachelor's degree in Education with progress toward advanced degree; Master’s degree preferred. Must at all times during employment possess a Nebraska Teaching Certificate with such endorsements as required by NDE Rule 10 and all other certification and training as required or assigned.
Experience Desired:
- Minimum five years teaching/administrative experience.
- Demonstrated successful experience as an elementary classroom teacher
- Demonstrated successful experience in school and/or district leadership
- Participation in professional learning about the Science of Reading and in the selection and implementation of High Quality Instructional Materials.
Reports To: Professional Learning Director
Terms of Employment: 190-200 Day Contract
Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks: The Professional Learning Coordinator/Literacy Coach is responsible for working collaboratively with ESU 13 school districts to support service planning, coordinate, and deliver professional learning opportunities. A key focus as Literacy Coach includes district support in implementing and maintaining quality educational instruction in reading and language arts, focusing on grades PK-3.
Essential Functions
- Complies with the Standards for ESU #13 Employee Performance & Code of Ethics and executes district policies and procedures appropriately.
- Maintains a positive and professional image of ESU #13 when interacting with the public, parents, teachers, administrators, school district personnel, ESU staff, etc.
- Exhibits strong verbal, written, analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Establishes and sustains effective, professional working relationships with teachers, administrators, students, and the education community while maintaining the appropriate level of confidentiality.
- Participates in professional growth, staying current in educational best practices in the areas of continuous improvement, leadership, assessment, curriculum, instruction, assessment, continuous improvement, and technology.
- Flexibility to work non-traditional hours when necessary
- Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department
Professional Learning Coordinator Responsibilities:
- Serves as a strategic consultant for ESU 13 school districts to support service planning
- Actively listens and responds to teacher and administrator requests for support, then works with PL team to provide/coordinate professional learning opportunities in person, school location or through distance learning.
- Collaborates effectively with staff, department teams, statewide organizations, and community agencies to coordinate student enrichment events.
- Ability and willingness to lead, coordinate, and communicate professional learning and/or attend meetings, Professional Learning Communities.
- Analyze and interpret data to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
Literacy Coach Responsibilities:
- Applies knowledge and communicates current research and theory in reading and writing development, instruction and leadership supporting statewide literacy initiatives (i.e. Nebraska Reading Improvement Act, Nebraska State Comprehensive State Literacy Development Program, PLC’s, MTSS) knowledgeably.
- Serves as an active member of ESUCC Staff Development Affiliate, Literacy Cadre meetings and in close collaboration with the Regional Literacy Coach and other professional learning opportunities related to Science of Reading
- Provide professional development opportunities and expertise for school districts and ESU staff and community professionals in the area of evidence-based reading instruction and learning (i.e. Science of Reading)
- Conduct observations, planning, and problem-solving sessions, using effective coaching principles, to tailor training and support for individual school needs in the area of reading, and developing local district capacity
- Engage in professional learning to remain that the forefront of literacy research and best practices to improve reading outcomes for ALL students.
- Maintain the Professional Learning Resource Library with current publications related to Science of Reading.
Working Conditions
1. Inside offices and classrooms.
2. Outside for activities with students and student supervision.
FLSA Status: Exempt.
Professional exemption: The employee has a primary duty of performing work requiring knowledge of an advanced type in a field of science or learning customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction and study or has a primary duty of teaching, tutoring, instructing, or lecturing in the activity of imparting knowledge and is employed and engaged in this activity as a teacher.
