GENERAL SUMMARY:The Area Coordinator (AC) member of the Department of Residence Life and Housing team will take the assist in staff selection and development, program development and execution, programs and services for all residential students. The AC directly oversees the supervision of 1-2 residential communities and Resident Assistant student staff. Within their communities, the AC will provide direction for and coordinate the activities of staff members in the areas related to spirituality, academic initiatives, student behavior, personnel, administrative policies and procedures, student and community development, staff supervision and development, the receipt and processing of applications, agreements, assignments, and maintain information and occupancy data.The AC is a live-in position, serves in the on-call rotation with the Residence Life staff, and requires 24 hours, 7 days a week emergency response outside of normal office hours and on weekends. This position requires evening and weekend work for special events and programs as needed.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM Work cooperatively with the Dean of Students, Director/Asst. Director of Residence Life and Housing to ensure community development which promotes a sense of residential belonging. Provide personal assistance to students through advising, counseling, discipline, and crisis intervention. Provide leadership to staff and students in the development of a community environment. (Floor community, hall community, and connection to the campus community). Facilitate the co-educational curriculum for the specific population of residential students: freshman, sophomores, or upperclassmen. Assist students with issues typical to their developmental level (for ex.- transition to college or graduate school or professional field, financial concerns, stress management, study skills, selecting a major, mentoring, etc.) Maintain a high level of engagement. Support and acts as a resource to the residential community. Ensure that the needs of residents, including those of minorities and special interest groups are assessed and that programs are initiated to meet those needs. Ensure that community development records are maintained including hall assessments, resources, participation, etc. for future use by staff and student leaders. POLICY ENFORCEMENT & DUTY COVERAGE Encourage self-discipline and respect for individual rights and community standards among residents. Clearly communicate Residential Life policy to staff and residents. When necessary, assist RAs and RLCs in confronting residents who violate policies. Manage the educational discipline process for the residential area. Assist with weekday, weekend, evening, and vacation duty coverage of campus. STAFF DEVELOPMENT Assist with the marketing, recruitment, and selection process of Residential Assistants. Train, and supervise the Residence Life Coordinator and Resident Assistants. Assess and conduct staff evaluations. Act as a liaison to other campus departments for the Office of Residence Life and Housing. Represent the Office of Residence Life and Housing and the Division of Student Success and Engagement on University Committees and participate fully in professional activities. DEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATION AND DECISION-MAKING Participate in regular meetings with both the Director/Asst. Director of Residence Life and Housing. Conduct weekly staff meetings. Attend Managers Meetings. Serve on and chair Residence Life committees assigned by the Director of HRL. Provide input to decisions regarding policies, procedures, and programs. Keep staff informed about critical issues and concerns in the area. Establish continuous communication with other Residence Life staff and University staff (Public Safety, Student Life, Health and Wellness, etc.). ADMINISTRATION Coordinate the administrative functions in the area, including preparation of weekly reports, key inventories, and timely completion of forms and correspondence. Coordinate check-in, check-out of all residents and coordinates/cooperate with the Director of HRL on all tasks related to the assignment of rooms. Assist with maintenance process of the residential facilities (reporting, follow-through, and follow up). OTHER Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree required with at least 2 years of experience in higher education and/or working with diverse student populations. Excellent leadership, communication (interpersonal, oral, and written), and customer service skills crucial; creativity and sound interest in student development is a must; skills in advising student groups preferred; must be computer literate; general knowledge of housing and residential life fundamental philosophies; proven skills in managing a staff/ students; must be a team player with strong work ethic; evening and weekend work, plus on-call duty will be required. This is a 12 month, live-in position. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:A Bachelor's degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling, or a related and 3-5 years of previous residential life experience is preferred.BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:Student/Customer Service Orientation.
