Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Underground Utilities MID-LEVEL Estimator to prepare accurate cost estimates for utility installation projects, including water, sewer, storm drains, and other infrastructure systems. The Estimator will analyze project requirements, review plans and specifications, and collaborate with project teams to develop competitive bids. This role requires a thorough understanding of underground utility construction processes and strong analytical skills to ensure project profitability.
Responsibilities
Estimating and Bidding:
- Review project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare detailed cost estimates.
- Calculate labor, material, and equipment costs, factoring in site conditions and project-specific challenges.
- Identify and quantify all scopes of work, including excavation, pipe installation, and backfilling.
- Prepare and submit competitive bid proposals, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Project Analysis:
- Analyze historical data and current market conditions to ensure cost estimates are realistic and competitive.
- Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes to select the most cost-effective options.
- Identify potential risks and opportunities within project plans and specifications.
Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure estimates align with project goals.
- Communicate with clients, subcontractors, and vendors to clarify project requirements and expectations.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations as needed.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of all estimates, bids, and supporting documents for future reference.
- Prepare cost breakdowns and value engineering proposals to optimize project profitability.
- Provide regular updates and reports to management on bid status and project opportunities.
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay up to date on industry trends, construction techniques, and material costs.
- Identify ways to improve the estimating process, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.
- Assist in developing and maintaining a database of unit costs and production rates.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with local codes, regulations, and permitting requirements for underground utilities.
- Familiarity with large-scale infrastructure or municipal projects.
- Experience in cost estimating or construction management (e.g., CPE, PMP).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- 3 years of experience in estimating for underground utility projects or similar construction work.
- Strong knowledge of underground utility construction methods, materials, and equipment.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid, PlanSwift) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documents.
Work Environment:
- Primarily office-based, with occasional travel to job sites for inspections and meetings; local in the city or surrounding areas.
- Requires attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
