Department Title: Undergrad Intern – Franklin Templeton Investment Solutions (FTIS) with the U.S. Advisory Portfolio Management team
Location: The intern candidate must be able to commute into the San Mateo, CA office on a Hybrid basis each week.
Position Summary:
The U.S. Advisory Portfolio Management team within FTIS, builds and manages multi-asset solutions for institutional programs and clients. The U.S. Advisory Portfolio Management team manages over $30bn in institutional portfolios with various risk and return objectives. We manage target risk funds, target date retirement funds, 529 programs, insurance platform portfolios and model portfolios.
Our team builds portfolios with products from the public and private markets teams within Franklin Templeton (and from outside firms) to build portfolio solutions for our clients. We sit at the center of Franklin Templeton and build portfolios using other teams’ products along with our FTIS Systematic factor based quantitative strategies. And we invest in both quantitative and qualitative investment products.
FTIS is the fastest growing team within Franklin Templeton and prioritizes innovative strategies towards our product offerings.
This role will give an intern direct exposure to the many dynamics of managing large and complex multi-asset institutional portfolios

An FTIS U.S. Advisory Portfolio Management Intern can expect to learn:
- Impact of macro-economic environment and market technical trends on portfolio positioning and performance.
- How to build portfolios starting with a strategic asset allocation, then adding a tactical asset allocation and then implementation into portfolio holdings.
- An understanding of how to use multiple asset classes to construct optimal risk/reward profiles using mutual fund and ETF holdings across different asset classes, geographies, sectors and style exposures.
- Use of different types of software and analytical tools to better understand past and future portfolio exposures and risks.
- Learn how to utilize active mutual funds, passive ETFs, systematic/quantitative factor-based funds and ETFs within multi-asset portfolios.
- How liquid and private alternatives are being used in multi-asset liquid portfolios.
- How to use futures to adjust portfolio exposure without impacting underlying held positions.
Key Responsibilities Can Include:
- Researching potential changes within multi-asset institutional equity, fixed income and liquid alternative portfolio holdings (in fund of fund/ETF portfolios).
- Ongoing analysis to integrate private alternatives into fund of fund portfolios.
- Using MosaiQ (FTIS internal investment platform) for portfolio management tasks and portfolio analysis.
- Using the MosaiQ Portfolio Dashboard for assessing any inconsistencies in portfolio holdings across different portfolio suites.
- Assistance with continued effort to streamline Model holdings (reduce holdings per portfolio).
- Inclusion in all research, PM and client meetings.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Understanding of investing risk versus reward tradeoffs.
- Interest in the investment characteristics of equities, fixed income and liquid alternatives.
- Interest and knowledge in macroeconomics and the current economic environment.
- Interest in the impact of economic, political, geopolitical trends on markets and the investment environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills.
- Some knowledge of python and mastery of excel.
- Ability to quickly learn and utilize FTIS investment technology platform.

Compensation Range: This is a full-time internship where students will work approximately 37.5 hours per week and earn competitive hourly pay of $37 - $47 USD per hour. There are several factors taken into consideration in making compensation decisions including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
