Job Title: Maintenance III (Plumber)

 

Supervisor: Director of Facilities

 

FLSA: Non-Exempt

 

Contract Days: 240 days

 

LOCATION: Facilities / Operations

 

Job Summary: Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems.             

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma and one to three years related experience and/or training
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as District Administration may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations
  • Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation pipe
  • Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors
  • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings
  • Cuts and threads pipe
  • Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of metals, such as iron. steel, brass, lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic
  • Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints
  • Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains
  • Washes, cleans, and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment and uses all tools and equipment carefully and as instructed
  • Troubleshoots and completes work order in a timely and effective manner
  • Performs repairs with high quality and effective work practices and always applies safety principles on all work performed
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment
  • Displays flexible attitude in applying skills and abilities to whatever job needs to be done
  • Cooperates with other craftsperson in getting jobs completed properly
  • Maintains acceptable attendance and tardiness standards as set by the department
  • Participates in educational programs and training classes to increase technical, safety and job skills
  • Uses time productively and adhere to Board of Education, District and Department policies, procedures and rules
  • Assumes supervisory responsibilities as requested
  • Supervisor may assign other duties and responsibilities as needed

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, stand, and reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, and crouch.

 

Additional physical requirements include the following:

  • Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 40 pounds
  • Sufficiently mobile to ensure the safety of students
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Manuel dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry
  • Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone
