What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator of Christian Education and Youth Ministries position at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST?
PURPOSE: Through teaching, worship, word and example, the coordinator guides students PK- 12 in Christian faith and life. This position supports the spiritual formation of children and youth to ensure consistency, continuity, and relationships. It is vital that this person show hospitality, warmth, and inclusion to all of the children and families. Providing leadership by example and is responsible for ensuring that all policies and procedures are followed.
SUPERVISOR: Pastor
SUPERVISION: Youth Ministry Associates and Children’s Ministry Associates
HOURS: This is a part-time position, of approximately 5-7 hours per week. Weekly scheduled evening programming during programming months of September-May and year round Sunday mornings Kid’s Church 8:30-11:00 AM (other special holidays and events may be required). Attend staff meetings and other special worship services and events as requested
COMPENSATION: $18.00-$25.00 per hour.
TIME OFF PAID: None, Coordinator responsible to find own coverage
SAFE CHURCH TRAINING: As part of our church’s commitment to the best practices for the care and safety of all children, a background check is required and Safe Church Training is provided.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate faith formation education through group prayer, devotionals and programming.
- Promotes the Christian education and youth ministry programs.
- Coordinates and leads the Sunday “Kids Church” (preschool-5th grades)
- Coordinates and leads weekly scheduled Kids Club ( preschool-5th grades)
- Coordinates Youth Group (for middle school and high school age students)
- Coordinates, Promotes, Enlists Volunteers and Provides Leadership as needed for special events including but not limited to: Vacation Bible School, Christmas pageant, 3rd grade student Bible presentations, teacher dedication during worship service, volunteer recognition and appreciation during worship service, Easter egg hunt and activities, service projects, week long mission trips for middle and high school aged students
- Ensures children and youth feel included, valued, and heard in our Faith family and have opportunities to be involved in worship and church activities
- Works with Pastor and Church Business Manager to ensure safe church practices including but not limited to: volunteer background checks, driver license/insurance documentation for transportation of children, documented program registration processes, emergency contact information, parental permission, emergency response protocol education, providing partners for middle school and/or high school volunteers
- Regularly communicates with pastor, office staff, students, families and members through multiple and consistent methods
- Recruits, trains, regularly communicates, and collaborates with staff, volunteers and Youth Ministry Associates and Children's Ministry Associates
- Analyzes member participation or changes in congregational emphasis to determine needs.
- Elicits input and feedback from all age levels to continuously meet needs and improve upon learning engagements, experiences, and events. (example ideas – afterschool “Kids Club” ; “Youth Lock In/Out Night”, “Family Sports Games”, etc.)
- Attends and actively participates as an adult leader in wider UCC conference events if our youth choose to attend.
- Coordinates and/or provides transportation when needed (carpooling).
- Analyzes revenue and program cost data to determine budget priorities.
- Attends meetings as requested by supervisor
- Serves as a substitute for the Children’s Message during worship services as requested by supervisor
- Partners with other churches and organizations within the community to provide robust and engaging learning, service, and spiritual opportunities
- Locates and distributes resources, such as periodicals or curricula, to enhance the effectiveness of educational programs.
- Abide by all Safe Church and congregation policies of First Congregational UCC
- Abide and follow attendance and cell phone policy.
- Work with Church Business Manager on supplies needed
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A faith-filled person who is passionate about spiritual formation for all ages, with a particular calling to work with children and youth.
- Experience working with children and youth
- A self-starter with strong leadership skills and the ability to organize and prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
- A person with strong verbal, written, interpersonal skills, who has the ability to communicate with and inspire the other members of our excellent team of volunteers and staff.
- A person with the ability to lead children in brief devotions and prayer.
