What are the responsibilities and job description for the Zoo Sanctuary Groundskeeper - Rec Leader (Part-Time) position at Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary?
The Folsom Parks & Recreation Department is hiring multiple part-time, temporary Zoo Sanctuary Groundskeepers to assist the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary.
If you enjoy working outdoors around native wildlife and have maintenance and groundskeeping skills, you will love working at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. Support the community and the zoo's mission statement of Teaching Responsible Behavior Toward All Animals by maintaining walkways, landscaping, buildings, and committing to cleanliness. Incumbents should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to follow direction, have the ability to work independently and observe safe work practices. This position is under the direct supervision of the Senior Program Coordinator and lead groundskeeper.
Schedule
- Duration: position is ongoing as long as needed and supported by the budget.
- 4 hour shifts. Starting at 7 a.m. May – September, and 8 a.m. October – April. May work more hours if desired, up to approximately 20 hours per week.
Pay & Benefits
- Non-exempt, hourly. Starting salary will depend on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
- Part-time positions are hourly and not eligible for benefits, and are limited to working 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). No full-time regular appointment will be made from this class.
Note: Unfortunately current active CalPERS members are ineligible for employment with part-time positions.
Examples of Essential Duties:
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.
- Pick up litter in and around the Zoo, check and empty trash.
- Clean, sweep, and wash visitor pathways.
- Clean/organize and maintain staff and public areas (such as benches, picnic areas, and windows).
- Light landscaping, gardening, and watering of plants. Occasionally larger landscaping projects and hardscape.
- Maintenance and repair tasks (changing a lock, painting a fence, fixing a gate, replacing damaged signs, etc.)
- Assist in both small and large projects like building animal enrichment, animal exhibits, platforms for the animals, assemble equipment, and help with community volunteer projects
- Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
- Operating a variety of basic hand and power tools safely and correctly. Must be able to safely use and maintain handheld gas and electric power tools.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Qualifications:
Basic to more complex landscape or maintenance experience is preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age by time of hire.
Licenses, Certificates, Registration Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by date of hire. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis. (1) Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor, frequent standing, walking, or driving; frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, and squatting. (2) Lifting: frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, reaching, hand/shoulder/elbow movements. (5) Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. (6) Emotional/Psychological: frequent coworker and public contact; frequent working alone and independent. (7) Environment: frequent exposure to outside elements (sun, wind, rain).
This position requires the passing of DOJ Fingerprinting, and a pre-employment physical with a rapid drug test.
