What are the responsibilities and job description for the Barn Helper position at Fremont Group?

The candidate will report to the Barn Manager. The Barn staff members have primary responsibility for the maintenance of the barn and stable areas, the feeding routines, and any general horse care duties. Responsibilities may also include: maintenance riding of personal horses or training riding of young and/or horses (as determined by Barn Manager and Employer based on barn staff member's experience/skill); the maintenance and repairs of the facility and equipment as well as grooming and tacking/untacking for rides as required. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge and experience working with horses. The candidate also must understand that they are part of a support team in caring for another enthusiast's string of sale and personal horses.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Complete stable management duties including feeding, mucking stalls, turn in/out, and general stable maintenance according to the specifications of the Barn Manager. Ensure all special care routines outlined for horses are carried out routinely and in accordance with the directions of management. Maintain clean and functional facility equipment (including tack). Advise the Barn Manager and/or the Assistant Barn manager of any needed repairs or safety concerns. Assist with program and horse related events, workshops, or clinics as requested by the Barn Manager and/or Executive Director. Ensure the health and well-being of all horses within the “herd.” Report any injuries, incidents, concerns, or unusual situations to the Barn Manager. In the event of an emergency, follow the emergency protocols (e.g. established emergency procedures, the phone tree, etc.). Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor at all times while on property or when acting as a representative of Employer.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Sufficient physical fitness consistent with the physical demands of the job. Must be able and willing to work in various weather conditions throughout the year. Valid Driver’s License. Competency in handling and care of horses, and a working knowledge of tack, grooming & tacking-up process. Good interpersonal / communication skills and a “team player” attitude; strong ability to take direction, feedback, and coaching, regardless of depth of experience; consistent follow-through and dependability a must. Maintain consistent professionalism and respectful interaction with colleagues, vendors/service providers, owners, guests, and potential buyers. Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize.

LIMITS OF RESPONSIBILITY & OTHER RULES: Feeding to be done according to feed boards. No changes to be made unless cleared by Barn Manager. No medications or supplements to be given unless specifically instructed by Barn Manager. Personal cell phone use to be minimized during work hours, though for safety barn staff who are working alone are encouraged to have a cell phone on them at all times.

  • Employer will provide workers’ compensation insurance. Employer provides a group health insurance program which will be offered for you and your eligible dependents. Employer will pay 100% of the insurance premium for the benefits you select. Insurance coverage is effective the 1st of the month following your start date. Employee will accrue Paid Time Off (“PTO”) to use in whatever way they wish (e.g. vacation, sick leave, personal or family reasons, funerals, religious holidays, etc.).
