SHELTER PROGRAM COORDINATOR: Children’s Advocacy, Safety Planning, & Parent Empowerment Services
Friend to Friend is a nonprofit, crisis service agency located in Carthage, North Carolina. Our mission is to help survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking rebuild their lives. We operate an advocacy center, an emergency shelter, and a 24/7 crisis line. Services we offer include shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, court advocacy, clinical counseling, support groups, hospital accompaniment, community education, and outreach.
This Position: The Shelter Program Coordinator (SH2) provides daily trauma-informed direct services to shelter clients and their children. The SH2 is responsible for planning, developing and providing safety programming for all clients and children within the Serenity House shelter during their stay. The SH2 oversees and offers parenting education and support to clients requesting parenting support. This position is full-time, 40 hours a week, position that assumes primary responsibility for shelter operations during the hours of 3:00pm-11:00pm, Monday through Friday. The SH2 reports directly to the Director of Shelter Operations.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions for the Shelter Program Coordinator (SH2) include but are not limited to:
- Provides trauma-informed, survivor-centered daily direct supportive services to shelter clients and their children.
- Provide childcare referrals to SH parents.
- Provide parenting education and/or referrals for parenting support to SH parents.
- Attend weekly SH case management meetings, typically on Tuesdays.
- Working with the SH team, ensure that every adult client within Serenity House has completed a Friend to Friend Safety Plan within 48 hours of intake.
- Ensure that Serenity House is operating with a Shelter Safety Plan in place at all times.
- Ensure that safety is the top priority by observing and documenting shelter safety issues/incidents and notifying appropriate staff.
- Answer crisis line and document if DV, SA or HT call. Document type of call (referral or seeking shelter). If SH is full, help make calls to other shelters to secure shelter for caller.
- Provide and offer daily children’s programming and trauma screenings.
- Maintain a clean children’s playroom. Request parents pick up their children’s toys and/or trash. If parent refuses, then the SH2 is responsible for picking up, sweeping the playroom floor, removing trash, daily, before leaving shift.
POSITION OVERVIEW DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with SH staff to share the responsibility of keeping the SH clean and clutter-free.
- Conduct and document daily walk-throughs within the shelter to ensure safety of clients, staff, and shelter grounds. Document any facility or grounds issues to DSO.
- Conduct nightly walk-throughs within the shelter to ensure safety of clients and staff.
- Develop and maintain a working relationship with local law enforcement, request drive-through checks periodically or as needed. When law enforcement or DSS visits SH, Document in writing, law enforcement or DSS case workers name and contact information.
- Strive, weekly, to update Client Safety Plan and Shelter Safety Plans.
- Daily, document 2-4 guidance advocacy sessions with clients.
- Document offering 1-2 client programming opportunities, weekly. These opportunities include, but are not limited to job counseling & training, including skill building; health education & counseling services; financial management, including financial literacy; educational support and services, such as connecting clients with opportunities available at Sandhills Community College, etc.
- Provide weekend staff on-call support, as scheduled.
- Coordinate substance abuse and or mental health therapy for adults. Keep client’s computer updated with recovery education and support education. Ensure client computer has updated recovery education and local AA/NA/AlaNon meetings.
- Help connect clients to recovery and/or mental health services and support, as needed
- Help complete exit planning and action plan. Help complete an exit plan 2-3 days before scheduled exit.
- Help adults that have been living in abusive households to learn how to identify problem situations, reach resolutions nonviolently, and build a sense of respect, competence, and pride in their accomplishments.
- Provide intakes, guidance advocacy, and crisis-line coverage, as needed.
- Attend mandatory staff meetings when scheduled and participate in continuing education as required.
- Daily and weekly, record all stats information into client encounter log and excel spreadsheet.
- Document all shelter services in spreadsheet each month and email to office staff.
- Organize, conduct, and document monthly fire drills with shelter clients.
- Assist other shelter staff in providing case management to assigned clients. (Case management may include setting meeting times with clients and completing case management notes)
- Show compassion, empathy and support to all shelter and outreach clients.
- Provide a brief weekly summary of shift activities to Executive Director and Director of Shelter Operations.
- Provide guidance advocacy, as needed.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
- Complete and sign your bi- monthly timesheets, on time.
- Abide by all policies and procedures within the Friend to Friend Handbook and Staff Manual.

Educational and Training Qualifications:
- Have a two-year degree in the Human Services field and/or related training.
- Have knowledge of interpersonal violence and how it affects victims.
- CPR Training required.

COMPENSATION: $18-20, depending on experience.
