The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

Program Overview

The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD), part of the Division of Disease Control, is composed of seven units/programs which are responsible for monitoring and investigating 73 infectious diseases including viral hepatitis, foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. BCD also monitors and analyzes trends in disease data and provides consultation to the medical community and the public on the recognition, prevention and control of communicable diseases.

Position Overview

We are seeking to fill one molecular epidemiologist position in the Bureau of Communicable Disease which will provide oversight and support of epidemiological activities related wastewater surveillance, advanced molecular detection, and antimicrobial resistance surveillance activities. It is expected that the analyst will work up to 35 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Assist with coordination between BCD and Public Health Laboratory activities
• Lead and coordinate wastewater surveillance activities which includes the following:
• Stay current on nationwide efforts and peer-reviewed literature on how wastewater surveillance including antimicrobial resistance activities that can be used to inform public health action.
• Lead coordination between the ARU and PHL and provide support to other units as needed for wastewater surveillance activities.
• Liaise with external partners (academics, federal, state and local public health agencies)
• Coordinate whole genome sequencing activities work within BCD:
• Join two existing co-leads in Division-wide coordination for the EDGE Community of Practice – Exploring Data for Genomic Epidemiology. This newly formed collaborative bridges laboratory and epidemiology subject matter experts across the Division of Disease Control to facilitate knowledge sharing on best practices for data integration and visualization, and to better understand how genomic epidemiologic data can be used to improve public health response.
• Support units as needed
• Support to the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit:
• To include existing and prospective sequencing data into routine surveillance and special projects on known and emerging resistant organisms. This could include planning for data collection, refining the process to identify and recover specimens for sequencing, prioritizing isolates for sequencing, refining approaches for data sharing, and supporting advanced analysis with epidemiology and bioinformatics colleagues.
• Support the One Health Team in the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit to build and strengthen routine surveillance operations and analysis of carbapenem-resistant organisms cultured from animals. This could include writing code to automate data retrieval from veterinary diagnostic labs, developing investigation processes for when CRO isolates from animals are identified, and establishing analysis plans for routine animal CRO surveillance data.
• Participate in cluster and outbreak investigations, as needed
  
  

Qualifications

• A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and two years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization.
  
  

SALARY

• Salary range is $120,000 to $141,492
