Description
Gagosian is seeking a highly organized and detail-orientated Registrar to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in logistics, art handling, and shipping, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously. They must excel in a fast-paced environment and be adept at working with diverse teams across multiple departments.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to
– Oversee and manage the safe-packing and transport of artwork to and from artists, museums, galleries, clients, and storage facilities.
– Maintain and update in-house database, ensuring the accuracy and of all information related to artwork.
– Manage shipping records, condition reports, installation instructions and storage inventories.
– Work closely with art handlers and collaborate on viewings, maintaining open communication on the handling and movement of artwork in and out of the gallery.
– Arrange for condition reports, framing and conservation of artworks.
– Facilitate on-site and off-site viewing requests from staff.
– Manage logistics for art fairs, exhibitions, and loans, including packing, transport, conditions reports, supervision, and insurance.
– Coordinate the delivery and installation of sold artworks, ensuring compliance with state tax laws and proper shipping documentation.
– Communicate with various global departments to ensure that project budgets are properly established and adhered to.
Qualifications for this role
– In-depth knowledge, including but not limited to, of packing, crating, transportation methods, and import and export compliance (domestic and international; strong network of fine-art supplier contacts a plus.
– Familiarity with sales tax, import duties, VAT, and insurance requirements for artworks.
– Experience managing and overseeing art loans and consignments to and from museums, galleries, and other institutions.
– Expertise in interpreting and preparing condition reports, and organizing conservation efforts when necessary.
– Strong knowledge of best practices for art handling and exhibition set-up.
– Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
– Ability to work both independently and within a team to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously in a fast- paced environment, with a keen attention to detail
– Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
– Minimum of 3 years of experience shipping high value art in the auction, fine-art shipper, gallery, museum, or artist studios
– Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS), preferably in an art field, or equivalent professional experience.
