Job Title: Mental Health Professional (MHP)
Position Overview: We are seeking a qualified and experienced Mental Health Professional (MHP) to support our summer camp program. This role is designed for someone with expertise in mental health, particularly in working with children, adolescents, and young adults. The ideal candidate can assess mental health needs, train staff, and be a resource in times of mental health crises. This candidate may be a school counselor or similar professional who is accustomed to working with young people in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Pre-Season Screening & Registration Review:
- Review camper registration input from parents and, where needed, follow up with parents before camp via telephone and email on any specific mental health concerns where needed. This may include referring cases to the medical team and/or program team where appropriate.
- Identify cases through this pre-screening process to ensure potential issues are flagged early and, where needed, create a plan for the camper’s success based on parent input. Collaborate with the medical and/or program team where appropriate, including when there are concerns a potential camper is not an appropriate fit for camp.
- Staff Training & Support:
- During training week, provide training sessions for camp staff on mental health best practices, especially for identifying and responding to common anxieties or mental health issues that might arise among campers. This includes creating specific training sessions for camp program staff.
- Be a key resource for staff in managing mental health concerns and supporting their efforts in the field. This includes participating in regular meetings with the program team (or medical team where appropriate).
- Parent Communication & Support:
- Meet with certain parents on check-in day (both prearranged and spontaneous) to follow-up on pre-screening conversations, discuss any mental health needs of campers or new strategies for camper success.
- Follow up with parents throughout the camp week only as indicated.
- Mental Health Crisis Support:
- Address significant mental health crises or situations that require immediate attention during the camp week.
- Participate with the Camp Directors and Camp Medical Provider(s) in assessment and decision-making regarding GCC’s capacity to support the camper at camp, or whether the camper should be sent home.
- Provide guidance and a list of resources for parents when a camper is sent home.
- Ongoing Collaboration with Camp Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Camp Director and Medical Services Director to review upcoming schedules, identify potential challenges, and plan for preemptive actions or interventions.
- Participate in Sunday morning briefing sessions with staff to prepare them form specific campers and overall camper population needs.
Schedule:
- The MHP is expected to work primarily Sunday to Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and may not need to be present on Thursday and Friday.
- Screenings for the following week's campers can be done on days at camp or days not on site.
Qualifications:
- Experience as a school psychologist, school counselor or similar role, preferably in a camp, school, or therapeutic setting.
- Strong skills in assessing and managing mental health crises with children and adolescents.
- Experience in training or educating staff in mental health protocols.
- Ability to collaborate closely with camp leadership, medical providers and parents.
- Comfort in making quick, on-the-fly assessments of mental health needs.
- Excellent communication skills, both in writing and in person.
