Job Title: Crew Chief
Summary/Objective:
GeoPoint is a land surveying company with multiple locations, specializing in land development, remote sensing, geospatial mapping, and commercial surveys.
The Crew Chief at GeoPoint is a leadership position responsible for directing a field survey crew in a variety of geomatic and land surveying tasks. This role involves the operation of survey equipment, supervision of field personnel, data collection and management, and the maintenance of equipment and vehicles. The Crew Chief ensures the accuracy and efficiency of survey operations while maintaining a professional demeanor with clients and neighbors.
Essential Job Functions:
- Operate all survey equipment, including but not limited to, total stations, GPS receivers, data collectors, and automatic levels.
- Ensure all equipment is calibrated and functioning properly before use.
- Direct other field personnel in daily survey operations.
- Assign tasks and oversee their completion to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
- Clear survey lines using a machete or other tools as necessary.
- Locate boundary corners using a magnetic location device.
- Verify boundary points and ensure accuracy in their placement.
- Properly enter data in the form of coordinates, angles, distances, offsets, auto linework, azimuths, bearings, and field codes.
- Ensure data accuracy and integrity.
- Ensure the survey truck is fully equipped daily.
- Schedule routine maintenance on the vehicle and report any mechanical problems to the Mechanic promptly.
- Report any issues with survey equipment to the appropriate personnel.
- Interact with clients and neighbors in a polite and respectful manner.
- Address any questions or concerns they may have regarding the survey operations.
- Conduct research and gather information necessary for survey tasks.
- Review historical records, maps, and other relevant documents.
- Acquire the work assignments for the day and all information necessary to complete the work.
- Ensure all crew members are briefed and understand their roles and responsibilities for each project.
Qualifications:
- Experience in geomatics or land surveying.
- Basic proficiency in operating survey equipment such as total stations, GPS receivers, data collectors, and automatic levels.
- Ability to lead and manage a small team.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Good physical condition and ability to clear lines and carry equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Effective communication skills with clients, team members, and other stakeholders.
- Familiarity with basic surveying software and data management practices.

- The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell.
- Able to get in and out of vehicle multiple times a day.
- Drive 30 to 200 miles daily.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
- It is required to work outside in all types of weather conditions, possibly for extended periods of time.
- The terrain may be rough, steep, wet, or swampy. Vegetation may be dense, and insects, snakes or animals may be encountered.
- Desk/Workstation may be located in a confined area.
- Moderate noise indoors/outdoors (i.e., computers, phones, printers, and traffic).
- Able to work overtime and some weekends.
- Able to work well in a team environment as well as being self-motivated and driven.
