School Marshal

Reports to: Executive Director-Student and Campus Services

Status: Non-Exempt

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Under direct supervision from the GISD Executive Director of Student and Campus Services and collaboration with Georgetown Police Department Student Resource Officers (SROs), provide security protection for students, campus personnel, patrons, and district property. Remains alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

o Security

o As defined by the Texas Commission on Law enforcement, the purpose of a School Marshal is to prevent the act of murder or serious bodily injury on school premises. School Marshals act only as defined by the written regulations adopted by the School Board/Governing Body and Texas Administrative Code.

o Work cooperatively with School Resource Officers, campus administration and GISD staff and students.

o Coordinate with district School Resource Officers to ensure streamlined processes and effective collaboration on safety-related responsibilities.

o Assist campus administration in the application and execution of all district safety protocols and guidelines including those outlined in the Emergency Response Guide.

o Assist campus administration in the development and implementation of campus safety protocols.

o Identify safety-related campus needs and communicate those needs to campus administration in a timely manner.

o Perform daily exterior door checks to ensure all doors are locked, maintained, and working properly.

o Monitor the interior and exterior of the building and campus property for potential threats to safety.

o Perform periodic internal and external security patrol on assigned campus.

o Respond to all calls from campuses concerning crisis situations and ability to de-escalate as needed.

o Facilitate walk-throughs by emergency responders.

o Operate all equipment, including firearms according to established safety procedures.

o Comply with policies established by federal and state law, including but not limited to State Board of Education and local Board policy.

o Attend required training and stay abreast of school safety issues and concerns.

o Prepare and file all appropriate reports.

o Maintain confidentiality of the campus/district safety plan and tactics used.

o Complete other duties as assigned.

o Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with students, staff, and visitors.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

o None.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Education/Certification/Experience:

o High School diploma or GED. Clear and valid Texas driver’s license. Must hold a current Texas concealed handgun license (LTC). Former military or law enforcement background required. Must be a successful psychological screener. Must not have a history of criminal activity. AED/CPR certified preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

o Possess skills and interest in working within an educational environment

o Ability to clearly and accurately write and record information in English

o Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English

o Ability to work professionally and effectively with others

o Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug tests

o Ability to complete 80 hours of TCOLE training

o Ability to pass a pistol qualification course annually with a 90% score and attend regularly scheduled firearms training

o Ability to restrain and/or detain individuals in an emergency situation

o Ability to implement stop and bleed training in an emergency situation

Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands:

o Equipment; two-way radio, and other security equipment, fire extinguisher, and standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

o Prolonged sitting, standing and walking; ability to walk 8-10 miles per day

o Moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds)

o Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); moderate exposure to noise

o Work environment involves exposures to hazards of physical risks, which require following safety precautions

o May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions; including violent confrontations with armed individuals

o Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others, and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously

o Work with frequent interruptions

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $27.50 - $32.74 per hour
