Position Title:         Aquarist I - Sharks

Department:           Fishes and Invertebrates

Classification:        Full Time, Non-Exempt

Direct Report:        Associate Curator, Zoological Operations    

 

Position Summary

Our Aquarist I will work with a diverse team of other Aquarists in the implementation and evaluation of husbandry for an exhibit gallery and will be responsible for implementing the daily operational requirements of a specific gallery.  In addition, Aquarist I will work with the gallery team in achieving goals and participating in staff education, training, and safety plan, as well as meeting personal and team goals and objectives.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Implements the zoological goals and standards for the Shark exhibit and other areas of responsibility
  2. Implements the daily operational requirements of the staff, animals and area of responsibility
  3. Participates in training, development and review process for individual development and enrichment
  4. Work with the team to maintain the highest quality staff and exhibits
  5. Follow established SOPs
  6. Demonstrate proficient SCUBA skills for working dives
  7. Interface effectively with other departments to maintain the highest quality standards
  8. Fosters working relationships with other institutions
  9. As needed, interact on behalf of the Georgia Aquarium with guests, media, general public, etc.
  10. Implement dive safety guidelines established by the dive safety officer
  11. To perform other duties as workload necessitates.     

 

Qualifications:

  1. Preferred, four-year degree in biology or related field
  2. Preferred one year work experience in an AZA accredited institution, or equivalent, working with aquatic animals and associated husbandry and life support.
  3. Certified SCUBA Diver
  4. Valid passport, or the ability to obtain one
  5. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
