The Georgia Composite Medical Board licenses physicians, physician assistants, respiratory care professionals, perfusionists, acupuncturists, orthotists, prosthetists, auricular (ear) detoxification specialists, residency training permits, cosmetic laser practitioners, pain management clinics, and genetic counselors. The Medical Board investigates complaints and disciplines those who violate The Medical Practice Act or other laws governing the professional behavior of its licensees.
The Georgia Composite Medical Board is seeking a Paralegal in the Legal Unit.
- Reviews and analyzes requests for records from legal services, the media, and other parties.
- Provides internal legal guidance for the retrieval, review, and distribution of records.
- Determines whether records are subject to redaction or withholding due to a legal exception.
- Corresponds daily with program administrators, outside vendors, and requesting parties to coordinate fulfillment of Medical Records Requests and Open Records Requests.
- Maintains calendar and scheduling of Medical Records Requests.
- Maintains database of all requests with supporting documentation in Department's electronic repository.
- Performs a detailed review and analysis of responsive records before disclosure to remove/redact any exempt contents such as protected health information. Coordinates responses to requests for production of documents and other legal requests.
- Processes and tracks payments for Medical Records Requests.
- Develop, draft and maintain quarterly manual updates.
- Performs job responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Serves as job expert or organization resource in assigned areas.
- Responds appropriately to inquiries, requests for assistance, complaints, etc. from Department/division staff and external parties.
- Coordinates functions with those of other units/divisions to resolve problems and ensure quality of services to customers.
- Assists with drafting and reporting disciplinary actions.
- Performs research on legal matters/questions
- Assists with legislation tracking.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in state government
- Prior administrative experience
- Is a certified paralegal in the State of Georgia
Bachelor's degree in business or related field from an accredited college or university AND Four years of experience related to area of assignment.
Note: An equivalent combination of education and job specific experience that provided the knowledge, experience and competencies required to successfully perform the job at the level listed may be substituted on a year-over-year basis.
This position is subject to a 6-month probationary period.
Necessary Legal Requirements:
Selected candidates are subject to mandatory pre-employment drug screening. Under the provisions of State Personnel Board Rule 9, these positions are subject to random drug screenings for continued employment.
Position may be filled at lower level, depending on experience and qualifications.
Current Georgia state government employees will be subject to SPB rule provisions.

Salary : $34,249 - $55,000
