The VP Controller directs and controls the accounting activities of the corporation. Responsible for general ledger and accounting functions including accounting and financial transactions and reporting as well as managing month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities. Provide proactive consultation and leadership to operating and corporate management on complex accounting issues. Ensure business unit accounting activities are carried out in accordance with GAAP and established accounting practices, policies and procedures, and in accordance with corporate finance guidelines. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of GAAP, as well as financial policies and controls, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver work products with a high level of accuracy while consistently meeting related deadlines.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee accounting function, ensuring accounting activities are carried out in accordance with established accounting practice, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures effective setup of accounting and financial reporting functions to meet the needs of the organization. Manage general ledger and related reporting activity, ensuring proper, accurate, and timely recording of accounting transactions and reporting.
  • Perform general accounting functions such as analyzing data for recording, classifying, and reporting, including review of journal entries and account reconciliations that may require complex transactions and treatments.
  • Apply established accounting principles, theories, concepts, and practices to complex problems, independently applying appropriate analytical procedures.
  • Manage various accounting and reporting functions which may include but not be limited to: GAAP, statutory and management reporting, and involvement in audit and operational planning. Manage the month-end close process to ensure timely completion of accounting and reporting activities.
  • Establish and maintain bank, audit and tax relationships.
  • Oversee the management of department staff, including human resource planning, resource allocation, staff selection, termination, training and development, performance management, and salary administration. Act as coach and mentor, provide motivation and developmental opportunities, and foster teambuilding.
  • Partner with operating leadership to ensure accounting needs are met. Provide operating leadership with management information and solutions to help them maximize profitability.
  • Identify business unit leadership needs and direct financial staff in interpreting and compiling data. Identify financial issues affecting the business and develop and implement recommendations for resolution. Anticipate customer needs for accounting and financial information and analysis and apply this strategically to help the business progress.
  • Lead and/or perform the most complex accounting research and special accounting projects.
  • Perform planning and budgeting for the unit(s) to ensure efficient and economical operations.
  • Oversee research, design, and maintenance of systems to support business unit accounting needs.
  • May perform other related duties and special projects as assigned or requested.

Minimum Requirements

Education, training, and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional accounting experience in a P&C insurance environment, preferably with experience in one of the big four accounting firms.
  • Current experience with Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) reporting.
  • Experience with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) is preferred.
  • Leadership experience highly desirable.
  • Professional designation, such as CPA, CMA, MBA, or similar is preferred.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Requires advanced accounting theory and practice knowledge to independently manage accounting function for business unit(s). A very high level of analytical ability is required to manage the most complex accounting activities and projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to foster teambuilding, act as coach and mentor, provide motivation, and influence business unit leadership.
  • Strong computer systems skills including general ledger systems and Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy, able to prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.

California Residents: The base pay range for this role at the time of posting is estimated to be Min: $167,154 - Mid: $222,872 - Max: $278,590. We target the midpoint of the range, and all compensation offers will be determined by various factors such as work location, education, experience, knowledge, and skills.
