Resident Camp Counselor - Camp Cosmo

Camp Cosmo Description:

Camp Cosmo is one of Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska properties near Grand Island and is where girls in grades K-12 have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities, which include, but are not limited to: archery, hiking, arts, crafts, Girl Scout curriculum (including earning badges). While at Camp Cosmo, you can hike the trails and be sure to cross the swinging bridge!

Role Description:

The Camp Counselor, under moderate supervision, serves as the day-to-day leader for camp programming. This role plans and facilitates daily activities (using Girl Scout curriculum and other educational resources), while maintaining a safe and clean environment. Training on Girl Scouts curriculum, working with youth, and maintaining safety standards will be provided.

Pay: $ 13.50

Key Accountabilities:

• Responsible to lead, assist and participate in the teaching of activities to meet session goals; actively participates in all program areas as assigned. Incorporates an appreciation of the outdoors into the program.
• Assists in program areas such as hiking, archery, all camp activities and arts and crafts, as directed.
• Ensure campers are always properly supervised.
• Is alert to campers and staff needs, assisting them with personal and/or health problems; consult with the Program and Outdoor Experience Specialist when appropriate. Responsible for campers receiving their medications as directed.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment for all programming (utilizing GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Camping Association and Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska). Work with Program and Outdoor Experience Specialist and Ranger to identify and correct maintenance problems promptly and efficiently.
• Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver programs, special events and all other resident camp activities and functions as assigned.
• Maintain regular communication with the Outdoor Experience Specialist (such as reporting concerns and updates and giving notification of accidents/incidents in a timely manner).
• Develop sound relationships with all girls and adult participants (such as learning participant’s names and conducting team building activities) to ensure a positive camp experience.
• Renders first aid as needed and isolates all cases of illness. Maintains an accurate written record of all injuries and illnesses and treatment given to each.

Qualifications:

• Be a member or be willing to become a member of the Girl Scouts, support the principles of Girl Scouting and adhere to the custom and policies of the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska.
• Be aware of and able to effectively handle personnel problems, health and safety procedures and emergency situations.
• Ability to work with girls and interact with all age levels.
• Ability to work effectively with parents, volunteers, staff and diverse communities.
• Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills, initiative, creativity and flexibility, including the ability to evaluate and make changes as necessary to ensure a successful Resident Camp program.
• Ability to work independently, self direct and exercise time management skills as well as good judgment.
• Willingness to work in camp setting and work irregular hours.
• Ability to bend, lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
• First Aid/CPR certification or willing to obtain during staff training.
• Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required.
• Must have regular, reliable, predictable attendance in performance of essential job functions.
• At least 18 years of age.
