Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an exciting independent marine research institute addressing critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. Genomic technologies provide an unprecedented opportunity to explore and understand the oceans vast biodiversity, promote sustainable and healthy oceans, and inspire new discoveries that impact human health. GMGI is looking for an innovative Scientist using data-driven approaches to advance our understanding of marine organisms and ecosystems. We are especially interested in the application of AI and other advanced computational techniques to mine datasets for biomarkers that confer resilience in shellfish. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as a driving force in advancing innovative research and an interest in translating discoveries into applied outcomes in conservation, fisheries, or human health. We will consider scientists at career levels of Research Associate I or II (categories detailed below).
Responsibilities :
Use genomics and advanced computational approaches to identify molecular drivers of disease and / or environmental resilience traits
Apply novel computational approaches (e.g. AI, systems level modeling, advanced statistical approaches) to complex genomic or multi-omic data sets
Utilize comparative omics approaches in meta-analyses to identify resilience biomarkers within and across marine species
Perform systems-level modeling of data from molecular, cellular, or population perspectives
Contribute to publishing results in leading scientific journals and presenting results at scientific conferences
Contribute to grant proposals, institutional fund-raising activities and community outreach activities
Contribute to GMGIs commitment to create a science community on Cape Ann
Qualifications :
- B.S. or M.S. in Genomics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Genetics, or a related field
- Background in applying genomic and computational approaches to answer questions about marine organisms and their environment
Proficient with the Linux environment and command line
Programming experience with commonly used languages for biological data analysis (e.g. Python, R)
Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts
Knowledge of a variety of AI techniques (clustering, decision trees, artificial neural networks, etc.)
Enthusiasm and commitment to GMGIs mission for science and education
This position will report to the Climate Resilience Research Scientist.
Salary commensurate with experience.
