Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut is seeking an innovative and experienced financial leader with a passion for our mission to join our team as Director of Finance.
The Director of Finance will oversee all daily accounting operations, including general accounting, grants accounting, retail store accounting, and payroll administration, ensuring compliance with company policies, GAAP, and all governmental regulations. This role will also be responsible for conducting complex financial studies to improve operational and financial effectiveness, performing in-depth financial analysis, and providing strategic financial guidance to the CFO and CEOs.

Responsibilities:
- Oversee and supervise daily accounting operations, encompassing general accounting, grants accounting, retail store accounting, and payroll administration.
- Supervise select Accounting department employees, including managing monthly aged accounts receivable, concentration cash accounts, and budget administration.
- Develop and prepare various financial reports, including forecasting for store openings, relocations, and capital projects, and provide subsequent narrative analysis for management.
- Integrate accounting systems with other departmental systems, such as payroll, Point of Sale, and HRIS.
- Assist in the preparation, analysis, and review of revenues and expenditures for Contributed Goods.
- Manage the preparation of journal entries and the distribution of wages and fringes for regular and consumer employees, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations and company policy.
- Conduct financial analyses, including lease vs. buy projections, pension projections, and other special projects through system development.
- Oversee the preparation of month-end closings.
- Review costs and perform cost-benefit analyses related to projects and programs.
- Perform complex statistical, cost, and financial analysis of data reported in various accounting systems and develop financial reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis.
- Record, classify, and summarize financial transactions in accordance with GAAP.
- Interpret financial transactions for users who make economic or business decisions.
- Utilize various software applications (spreadsheets, databases, statistical packages) to manage and format data and reports.
- Exercise sound judgment and take ownership of decisions impacting people, costs, and service quality.
- Organize and coordinate the year-end general ledger account analysis for external auditors.
- Organize and coordinate analysis for the agency’s general liability, P&C, and D&O insurance programs.
- Maintain the MIP accounting software system and liaise with the manufacturer for software upgrades.
- Prepare monthly GII MSR, annual ASR, annual GII dues calculation, and quarterly CHFA submittals.
- Play a significant role in the budget preparation process.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or business with a strong information systems background; MBA a plus.
- 5-7 years of progressively responsible related financial experience.
- Advanced knowledge of financial software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Ability to prepare financial reports, statements, documents, and entries according to established procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of GAAP.
- Experience developing, designing, and implementing accounting systems and integrating them with payroll and other systems.
- Ability to examine and verify financial documents and reports and develop accounting procedures and forms.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and Outlook.
