The Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM), located in downtown Grand Rapids, has a unique contract opportunity as a GRAM Summer Art Camp Assistant Instructor. GRAM Summer Art Camps take campers beyond the Museum walls to stimulate creative expression through daily art-making activities and gallery tours with GRAM camp instructors. Campers learn collaborative problem-solving skills through hands-on art-making and enriching group communication. Under the supervision of the camp Lead Instructor, the Summer Art Camp Assistant Instructor will help develop curriculum, instruct, and facilitate (6) week-long summer camp workshops and gallery tours to children ages 4 – 15 years old.
Anticipated Contract Hours:
May Orientation (date TBD): 6 hours
Dates of Camp: June 9 – 13 (7 - 9 year olds); June 16 – 20 ( 7 - 9 year olds);June 23 - 27 (4 – 6 year olds); July 7 - 11 (4 - 6 year olds); July 21 – 25 (10 – 12 year olds); July 28 – Aug 1 (13 – 15 years olds)
Hours of Work: 7:30 am - 1:00 pm
This unique position will provide opportunities for writing, interpretation, and studio instruction relating to GRAM’s collection and temporary exhibitions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Assisting with all activities and helping out where needed each week.
- The instructor will help coordinate drop off/pick up times of campers, co-lead opening activities, and facilitate programs under the direction of the Summer Art Camp Lead Instructor.
- The instructor will be expected to attend training sessions, prepare lesson plans in collaboration with the Lead Instructor, coordinate supply list with Lead Instructor, and provide The instructor will also be expected to arrive at least one hour prior to the session (unless otherwise instructed), set up the studio space and materials, help maintain the daily schedule, and clean up/put away all supplies at the end of each day.
Requirements:
- Candidates should have strong experience with classroom management for large groups of students ages 4-15.
- Art History, Art Education, Fine/Studio Art, or Museum Studies majors at Junior or Senior levels are preferred.
- Candidates should have strong awareness of different classroom/studio management styles, organizational and research skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, an aptitude for detail and craft, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
