Job Title: Visitor Services Representative (VSR) GM/SBIVM
A. SUPERVISED BY: Visitor Services and Gift Shop Manager
B. POSITION SUMMARY: Visitor Services Representatives provide hospitality and a positive visitor experience for District guests at the admission desks and museum gift shops.
C. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Greets, directs, and assists public during museum district experience.
· Opens and closes the museum spaces prior to public visitation, including turning exhibits on and off, and reporting any concerns with maintenance, cleanliness, etc. to the appropriate staff.
· Handles admission and gift shop sales with the Point-of-Sale system, including daily museum passes, planetarium tickets, special event tickets, memberships, donations, gift shop sales.
· Actively promotes membership sales.
· Provides information about Voices of Iowa oral history project to veterans.
· Collects demographic data on visitors.
· Gathers evaluations and feedback from visitors about their experience.
· Counts the cash drawer daily.
· Keeps the gift shop tidy, clean, and attractive.
· Periodically walks the exhibit halls to check on visitors.
· Gives guided tours of the exhibit spaces in the Grout Museum of History and Science/Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum and the Rensselaer Russell House as scheduled.
· Runs video planetarium shows in the Norris Corson Family Planetarium as needed.
· Answers the telephone as needed.
D. SECONDARY DUTIES:
· Assists staff in other areas of the museum when needed (ex: bulk mail projects).
E. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Education, Experience and Training: The minimum formal education for the Visitor Services Representative is a two-year diploma. This employee must have excellent people skills and a professional and friendly demeanor. Retail experience is preferred but not required. Familiarity with Microsoft Suite and comfortable learning and working with new computer software esp. with Point-of-Sale software is a must.
- Physical Requirements and Demands: This person spends a great deal of time on their feet and seated, as well as lifting and moving boxes. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
- Mental Demands: This employee must be a person who can work with all kinds of people, who is able to set priorities and complete tasks with little supervision and is cooperative and flexible at changing priorities. The ability to solve problems effectively, provide excellent customer service, and show professionalism and kindness to all visitors, patrons, contractors, volunteers, and staff is a must.
F. EQUPMENT AND TOOLS: The Visitor Services Representative must frequently use the copy machine, telephone, computer, and Point-of-Sale. Must have a valid driver’s license and current auto insurance.
Part-time position for an average of 22 hours per week.
Wage: $13.00 per hour
Schedule: Thursdays-Saturdays, 9:30-5:00 May-October; 9:30-4:00 November-April
Education: Associate’s degree (2 years’ experience preferred) or equivalent work experience
Experience or skills: Customer service, retail, sales, hospitality, public speaking
