Position Summary:
The Infection Control Preventionist is responsible for ensuring compliance with infection control guidelines, federal and state regulations. Compliance is achieved through ongoing training of staff, compliance audits, analysis of information including resident and staff infections – treatment of resident infections. Services are provided in accordance with the mission of Guardian Angels.
Job Duties:
- Responsible for establishing and maintaining compliance with the facility’s overall infection control program and prevention. This program will maintain current standards for infection control, disease specific illnesses.
- Responsible for assisting in implementing the infection control module in PCC, including providing training to current staff/newly hired nurses to ensure that the program is being utilized appropriately and functioning to full capacity.
- Responsible for assisting in developing documentation tools for assessment of initial infection, daily monitoring/documentation of infections until resolution in achieved. Documentation tools will include development of individualized resident care plans denoting infection present.
- Responsible for determining compliance of facility with antibiotic stewardship measuring using Loeb’s and McGeer’s criteria. Trends in antibiotic therapy utilization will be reviewed.
- Responsible for monitoring for effective use of transmission-based precautions and quarantine/isolation where indicated.
- Responsible for monitoring for evidence of cross-contamination between residents and staff.
- Reports infectious disease to Minnesota Department of Health as/where required by MDH.
- Coordinates COVID-19 and influenza vaccine clinics.
- Tracks vaccine status for all residents, including data in PCC Immunization section.
- Assist with contact tracing for COVID-19 and influenza cases (or other diseases as needed).
- Conducts fit-testing of N95 masks for facility staff as indicated.
- Conducts audits of infection control practices, including at a minimum:
- Handwashing
- PPE use; donning and doffing
- Compliance with masking, eye protection for staff, masking for residents in hallways and activities.
- Monitoring of compliance with temperature checks, symptom screening on entrance to building.
- Environmental cleaning activities.
- Performs annual facility assessment of infection control practices.
- Prepares statistical data and reports outcomes at QAPI meetings.
- Attends APIC meetings and bring information back to the leadership team.
- Consults with facility management team, Medical Director, CDC, and the county and state health departments, Corporate Director of Quality Improvement, Education and Risk Management as needed or required.
- Resolve infection control problems, and identifies new opportunities to improve service and reduce costs.
- Lead industrial hygiene program to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, mitigate and control workplace conditions.
- Provides education to staff as it relates to infection control and assessments.
- Participates in Manager on Duty (MOD) rotation.
- May work occasional late night, early evening hours and weekends to meet the needs of the community to provide education.
- To assist in providing a dignified, respectful, resident-centered environment for residents.
- Follows universal precautions, facility infection control guidelines, sanitation and safety standards of practice in all work and activities.
- Uphold confidential information as required by Guardian Angels policy and procedure and as related to HIPAA.
- Uphold the mission, vision, and values of Guardian Angels.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Current MN RN license in the state of Minnesota; license is unrestricted.
- Current CPR certification is required.
- Must have completed specialized training in infection prevention and control.
Experience:
- Three plus years prior RN experience required, geriatric experience a plus.
- Prior infection control experience required.
- Prior experience in PointClickCare (PCC) highly desired.
- Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively as situation dictates.
- Ability to work in stressful situations and maintain professional demeanor.
- Excellent verbal and written (read, write) communication skills.
- Self-motivated, ability to prioritize. Effective problem solving skills.
- Maintains good attendance and punctuality.
