Job Description
Job Title: Patient Transportation Specialist
Department: Transportation
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt - Eligible for Overtime
Employment Status: Full-Time
Location: Harrison County Community Hospital (HCCH)
Reports to: Marketing
Job Summary:
The Patient Transportation employee is responsible for safely operating a vehicle to transport patients and/or supplies as assigned. This position may include assisting patients in and out of the vehicle and requires excellent customer service and adherence to all safety regulations and confidentiality standards.
Essential Functions:
• Operate hospital vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
• Assist patients in and out of the vehicle as needed.
• Determine the best route for efficient transportation of patients and/or supplies.
• Perform daily safety and maintenance checks on assigned vehicle(s).
• Keep the vehicle clean and in good working condition.
• Communicate delays, no-shows, or other issues to the supervisor promptly.
• Maintain positive and courteous interactions with patients, families, and coworkers.
• Ensure all passengers use seat belts and follow safety protocols.
• Report all incidents, accidents, or patient concerns as per policy.
• Attend and participate in required training and in-services.
• Demonstrate physical ability to lift or assist patients as needed.
Qualifications:
• Valid Class E driver’s license, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Experience working with older adults preferred.
• Prior experience transporting patients or passengers preferred.
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or GED required.
Performance Standards:
Customer Service & Ethics
• Demonstrates understanding of patient rights and maintains confidentiality at all times.
• Greets all passengers courteously and respectfully.
• Responds to passenger needs within established guidelines and communicates concerns to supervisor.
Vehicle Maintenance & Operation
• Conducts pre-shift inspections and documents vehicle condition.
• Maintains vehicle cleanliness and safety standards.
• Follows traffic laws and hospital driving policies.
• Uses communication devices (e.g., cell phones) for emergencies only.
Communication & Incident Reporting
• Reports accidents, injuries, and no-shows promptly.
• Completes incident and vehicle maintenance reports as required.
Training & Development
• Attends required in-services and training sessions, including safety and lifting techniques.
Skills and Physical Requirements:
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Basic math, grammar, and reading comprehension.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred.
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift/move up to 50 lbs.
• Requires frequent reaching, pulling, pushing, and twisting.
• May require occasional exposure to communicable diseases.
• Good vision, manual dexterity, and eye-hand-foot coordination are necessary.
