What are the responsibilities and job description for the Museum Experience Associate position at Hastings Museum?
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Actively promote a positive visitor experience throughout their stay. This includes greeting guests, understanding, promoting, and answering questions about all the Museum offers; selling tickets, memberships, and merchandise; and ensuring they are entering a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-kept environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong customer service skills and cash handling skills, as well as computer experience required. Bi-lingual (Spanish) is preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
- Welcome and engage with museum visitors and guide them to accessing the building to get the most out of their visit. Effectively share accurate information on the museum’s mission, history, collections, and exhibits. Actively promote events, programs, shows, and memberships.
- Initiate and complete sales transactions on the TAM POS System with a high level of accuracy, correctly countback change for cash sales, and the ability to balance drawers at the end of the day.
- Monitor traffic in and out of the exhibits and theatre while verifying appropriate admission has been collected.
- Ensure Lied Theatre system is ready and operating correctly before each show.
- Respond appropriately to visitor questions, comments, and concerns. Communicate visitor feedback using appropriate channels. Refer difficult questions/complaints to Visitor Services Representative or Director.
- Follow and enforce Hastings Museum’s policies and procedures to ensure the safety of museum collections, property, and visitors. Ensure security using observation and surveillance systems. Report potential incidences of vandalism or theft to supervisor.
- Assist in setting up for events and rentals, work as needed during these activities, and clean and put way materials after the event.
- Perform cleaning tasks in the building including vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning glass, dusting, cleaning, and restocking restrooms, and removing trash and recycling to outdoor containers.
- Observe the condition of the facilities and report damage and/or repair needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Ensure the building and walkways are free of debris and other tripping hazards, including removing snow from walks.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
- Create items by hand, using a variety of methods and materials, for the Education Department. Cut, shape, fit, join, mold, or otherwise process materials, using hand tools and machinery.
- Stock shelves, displays, rack cards, brochures, ticket stock and other supplies as required. Notify Visitor Services Representative or Director of low product/supply quantity to ensure re-ordering before depletion.
- Occasionally provides administrative support in the form of word processing, databases, and research.
- Occasionally open/close building and areas as scheduled, following established procedures.
- Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as needed.
- May serve as a member of various employee committees, boards, or organizations.
- Other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Strong communication skill, both oral and written with the capacity to analyze and problem solve.
- Ability to work with a diverse public, to make sound decisions quickly while under pressure, to demonstrate self-motivation while working as part of a team, to be receptive and willing to learn new process or procedures.
- Experience with basic computer software (Microsoft Office).
- Basic arithmetic and its applications.

Equipment
- Computers (desktop, laptop, netbook, etc.), scanner, printers, TAM POS Ticketing System, telephone system, security systems, bar code reader, magnetic card reader, ADA equipment for theatre, and Penny Press.
- Office Equipment—copy machine, file cabinets, and calculator
- Audio/Visual—Large format theatre digital projector, Television, DVD player, etc.
Technology/Software
- Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.; internet browser; Tyler Munis; square, and TAM.
Majority of work is performed in the museum building but may work in locations outside and/or away from the museum. The noise level is usually moderately quiet but can become elevated.
