General Statement of Duties


Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher implements the Behavior Learning Intervention & Support Services (BLISS) program. Provides de-escalation and behavior support as needed. Plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for providing specialized behavior instruction and support, creating a flexible program and learning environment that allows students with disabilities to benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aids, accommodations, and other needed supports. Classes taught may be single or multi-grade level, subject, skill or specialty oriented. Works within a team or departmental setting but may work independently in a unique teaching specialty.



Essential Duties


  • Provides direct and indirect social and behavioral skills instruction for students receiving support from the BLISS program

  • Provides push in support to students in the general education setting in order to maximize student learning and provide positive behavioral support

  • Provides support to classroom teachers to help foster the use of evidence based practices and to create positive relationships between teachers and students

  • Respond to individual student situations as a student resource when called by teachers or administrators

  • Responsible for maintaining a service log for documenting the delivery of student services

  • Provides relevant professional learning opportunities to school staff in order to support the unique needs of students in the BLISS program

  • Provides case management to students in the BLISS program

  • Employs evidence based special education strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of self-regulation and increase prosocial behaviors for identified students.

  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.

  • Meets with parents to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs.

  • Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.

  • Maintains accurate and complete student records and prepares reports on children and activities, as required by federal and state law, district policies, and administrative regulations.

  • Establishes clear learning objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates those objectives to students.

  • Develops plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of BLISS students in inclusive classroom settings.

  • Collects and analyzes student data to inform educational decision making.

  • Assists in the development of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and implementation of Behavior Improvement Plans(BIP).

  • May provide behavior observation consults for students with disabilities in the school who are not in the BLISS Program

  • Assists in preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports.

  • Supervises paraprofessionals assigned to the program.

  • Maintains professional competence by participating in professional learning activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.

  • Attends required professional learning opportunities as assigned by the BLISS specialist or the Director of Exceptional Education

  • Performs other duties as assigned and approved by the Director of Exceptional Education.




Minimum Qualifications


Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence based teaching practices (reinforcement, prompting, visual schedules, antecedent based intervention, etc.). Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work. Demonstrates understanding of functions of behavior and is knowledgeable of interventions matched to each. Experience with a variety of evidence-based instructional practices as well as data collection and its utilization. Knowledge of special education laws, policies and practices. Proficient with Microsoft and/or Google Suite and other related educational software.

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in special education. Master’s degree in special education preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.



Additional Information


The minimum salary for this 209-day position is $54,602 with a bachelor’s degree, $57,223 with a master’s or $59,970 with a doctorate.
*Note: This salary is based on the recommended 2023-2024 financial plan. The 2023-2024 financial plan is not yet approved / adopted; scheduled for approval on May 11, 2023.

The annual salary for this position will be prorated based upon the official start date.
