HEALTH EDUCATOR

Job Role Summary

Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of tobacco education programs. Provides leadership and staff support to the Smoke Free Indy coalition.

Associated Job Duties

• Participate in Smoke Free Indy committees providing leadership and administrative support.
• Compiles requested data on tobacco/smoke free air policy and tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.
• Conducts and evaluates health education programs through a healthy equity lens on subjects related to tobacco control with neighborhood groups, multi-family housing communities, youth/youth-serving organizations, the general public, and other interested organizations and individuals.
• Designs, develops, and distributes educational print material as necessary including quarterly Smoke Free Indy newsletter.
• Creates content for Smoke Free Indy social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube).
• Assists in communicating the objectives/services of Smoke Free Indy and the Health Department to the general public, community agencies, and professional groups.
• Reviews equipment resources; recommends audio-visual materials for purchase.
• Builds rapport and cooperative relationships within Smoke Free Indy, public administrators, agency staff, and neighborhood groups, and individuals.
• Maintains confidentiality of information: (a breach is cause for termination).
• Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercises and in the response to public health emergencies, as directed.
• Participates in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling a minimum of eight (8) hours annually.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Assists in seeking external funding in the area of prevention and control of chronic disease.
• Functions as team member along with other Chronic Disease Program staff.
• Assumes responsibility for professional self-growth and continued development in relevant public health practices.

Qualifications

• Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Health Education, Public Health, Communications, or one of the social, behavioral, or medical sciences, and one year of related experience.
• If a Health Educator, Certified Health Education Specialist is preferred.
• Current Indiana driver’s license and use of automobile.

Licenses/Certifications Required

• Valid Indiana driver's license and use of automobile.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Basic understanding of social media technology and other current communication media.
• Knowledge of tobacco control strategies.
• Basic data collection, entry, and management skills.
• Community health education philosophy, methodologies, principles, practices with the ability to apply this knowledge in the community organization process.
• Understanding of adult learning principles, learning theory, and human relations.
• Daily contact with coalition partners for scheduling, work plan implementation, and other program-related issues.
• Ability to function effectively in a number of different settings: coalition meetings, community groups, industry, and other outreach sites.
• Cognitive ability to read and interpret general health education materials, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to speak effectively before small groups of citizens or employees.

Mathematical Skills

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Working Environment

• Primarily office environment; outreach activities in varied public sites throughout the county.
• Physical demands include lifting lightweight materials on a routine basis.
