In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring accurate utility billings and contributing to the smooth operation of our city's accounting functions.
About the Role:
As our Utility Billing & Bookkeeping Specialist, you will be responsible for a variety of critical tasks, including:
- Bookkeeping:
- Performing monthly bank reconciliations.
- Ensuring compliance with city purchasing policies.
- Verifying purchase order accuracy.
- Assisting with general ledger analysis and reconciliation.
- Supporting the annual financial audit.
- Maintaining accurate records and files.
- Customer Service:
- Providing in-person and phone assistance to the public.
- Receiving and receipting utility payments.
- Resolving customer inquiries and issues promptly and professionally.
- Maintaining a positive public image and fostering strong customer relationships.
- Utility Billing:
- Providing excellent customer service, assisting with new service setups and terminations.
- Calculating billing adjustments, pro-rating charges, and generating final billings.
- Maintaining and updating utility accounts using computerized systems.
- Generating reports for the utility department and city administration.
- General Duties:
- Assisting other departments with project-based tasks.
- Performing related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of responsible work experience in bookkeeping, customer service, or accounting.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Some knowledge of bookkeeping and general accounting techniques, particularly within computerized systems.
- Proficiency in personal computer operations and applications, including MS Excel and Caselle (or similar software).
- Knowledge of laws and regulations governing accounting and utility billing.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Skill in operating personal computers and data entry software.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple tasks.
- Excellent problem-solving and numerical skills.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Proficiency in operating standard office equipment.
- Ability to type, be detail oriented and possess excellent organizational skills.
Special Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must pass a background check, pre-employment drug screening, and provide a satisfactory driving record.
Work Environment:
This position operates in a typical office setting. Physical requirements include walking, standing, sitting, and reaching.
