About Us
Highland County is known as Virginia's Switzerland, nestled in the Allegheny Mountains on the western border between Virginia and West Virginia. Our remote, rural, and mountainous location presents unique challenges and opportunities for our residents and visitors alike.
With a population of approximately 2,300 people spread over 460 square miles of mountains and valleys, Highland County is a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other. The Town of Monterey is our only incorporated town, and we have no cities.
Our primary employer is the Highland County School System, and farms producing sheep and cattle support the poultry industry. We also have an older population and many second homes located here.
