Q Center Leadership Advisor

The Q Center at Highline College aims to provide a space of inquiry and affirmation for exploring LGBTQIA topics and to raise awareness of the importance of queer and trans inclusion in campus equity initiatives. 

The Q Center Leadership Advisor coordinates student engagement programs and initiatives through the Q Center to increase awareness of social justice issues and fosters essential leadership skills in students to become culturally responsive practitioners and social change agents. This position provides leadership for campus-wide culturally responsive programming centering diversity, equity and inclusion or our LGBTQIA population.

This position is a salaried overtime-eligible, at-will, full-time position. 

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8am -5pm

Reporting directly to the Director for the Center for Cultural & Inclusive Excellence, this position will:

Q Center Programming and Planning - 30%

• Provide leadership in coordinating, visioning, and managing the programs and initiatives in the Q Center;
• Create curriculum and facilitate leadership training to support the growth and development of Q Center Peer Facilitators and student leaders engaged with CCIE/CLS programming;
• Support student participation in national and local conferences around LGBTQIA inclusion and intersectionality, including the Queer Students of Color Conference;
• Support facilitation of campus-wide Safe Zones Trainings and development of Safe Zones student programming;
• Coordinate campus-wide culturally responsive programming through the Center for Cultural & Inclusive Excellence and the LGBTQIA Task Force that centers LGBTQIA belonging, such as LGBTQIA Week, Pink Prom, and Lavender Gradation;
• Collaborate with campus partners to enhance co-curricular student engagement and programming;
• Collect and analyze data to ensure Q Center is meeting the needs of LGBTQIA students;
• Develop a guide of appropriate campus and community resources based on student needs;
• Represent the Q Center at campus and community events to build relationships with campus supporters and community partners;
• Maintain communication with campus and community via Q Center email and social media;
• Coordinate paperwork for events/programs for room reservations, catering, materials and supplies, and student travel. 

General Leadership Advising/Leadership Programming Team- 30%

• Empower students towards campus communities and leadership experiences;
• Create appropriate, culturally responsive and needed leadership training curriculum to support the growth and development of students and communities;
• Model and promote the concepts of Servant Leadership, social justice and inclusion;
• Collaborate with the Unit Leadership Programming Team, providing robust leadership development programs to the Highline College student community.

Student Supervision – 20%

• Supervision of the Q Center Student Leaders who develop peer facilitated dialogues focusing on social injustices and oversee daily operations of the Center;
• Provide continuous training and professional development opportunities.

Unit Collaboration – 10%

• Update the Q Center Website;
• Support other duties as assigned to support the offerings of the CLS & CCIE work unit.

Participate in Weekly Staff Meeting – 10%

Competencies

• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills;
• Experience working with people of color, women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, questioning, intersex, transgender people and their allies (LGBTQIA);
• Knowledge of the local area and the LGBTQIA resources in our community;
• Knowledge of general extracurricular and co-curricular offerings at a community college;
• Understanding of intersectionality within LGBTQIA spaces;
• Able to work collaboratively with faculty and staff;
• Commitment to the mission of a community college and its support of student success through engagement and involvement opportunities;
• Strong professional and ethical standards;
• Awareness of trauma-informed practices;
• Commitment to personal growth and expanding own understanding of social justice;
• Knowledge and intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite;
• Ability to maintain strong professional and ethical standards;
• Able to problem solve and think independently;
• Manage multiple tasks effectively;
• Proficiency in navigating remote working environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

• Associate of Arts degree; AND
• Two years of related experience in a college setting or student involvement/leadership experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Baccalaureate degree and one year of related undergraduate student involvement/leadership experience OR  Masters degree in student development or related field of study;
• Knowledge of general extracurricular and co-curricular offerings in a community college environment;
• Experience planning and conducting trainings and workshops;
• Communication proficiency in a foreign language;
• A demonstrated ability to provide direct supervision and coaching to paid student employees;
• Experience in coordinating programs in a college setting, human services or a related field;
• Awareness of trauma-informed practices;
• Minimum of two years coordinating programs in a college setting, human services or a related field.
