About the role:
As a Senior Accountant, you’ll be responsible for managing and generating financial data for all dealership departments, ensuring the accurate financial condition of the business. This position oversees the accounting office and administrative functions while supervising a team, including the Payroll/Benefits Administrator. The Senior Accountant works closely with dealership leadership to provide timely financial reporting, ensure compliance with government regulations, and support overall dealership operations.

About the role:
As a Senior Accountant, you’ll be responsible for managing and generating financial data for all dealership departments, ensuring the accurate financial condition of the business. This position oversees the accounting office and administrative functions while supervising a team, including the Payroll/Benefits Administrator. The Senior Accountant works closely with dealership leadership to provide timely financial reporting, ensure compliance with government regulations, and support overall dealership operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management:
- Train and supervise accounting and administrative personnel, including the Payroll/Benefits Administrator.
- Provide guidance and support to ensure team effectiveness and adherence to policies and procedures.
- Analyze and organize office operations and workflows to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Crosstrain and develop a qualified backup for critical roles within the team.
- Prepare accurate monthly financial statements according to dealership guidelines and manufacturer formats.
- Provide daily operating controls (DOC) and keep dealership leadership informed of trends and key financial metrics.
- Participate in the preparation of short- and long-term forecasts to support financial planning.
- Compile reports and financial analysis as requested by management and the dealer principal.
- Reconcile key accounts monthly and approve adjustments to inventory and receivable accounts.
- Control all posted documents, including time records, vehicle deals, commissions, and inventory changes.
- Manage the preparation and posting of payroll and maintain payroll records.
- Ensure compliance with government regulations, including payroll taxes, sales taxes, and financial reporting requirements.
- Oversee the preparation and filing of tax reports, deposits, and returns in a timely and accurate manner.
- Manage daily bank deposits and maintain an effective cash management system, including forecasting cash needs.
- Monitor and manage petty cash amounts and oversee dealership cash operations.
- Provide oversight and support to the Payroll/Benefits Administrator to ensure accurate and timely processing.
- Ensure benefits-related payments and reporting are completed accurately and on time.
- Ensure manufacturer accounts, including warranty claims, rebates, interest, protection, and co-op advertising accounts, are current and accurate.
- Maintain compliance with all state and federal regulations regarding employment and accounting practices.
- Manage dealership job descriptions, employee records, and other confidential employment files.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the automotive or dealership industry.
- Proven leadership skills with experience managing teams.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, payroll processing, and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with dealership management systems (e.g., Dealertrack) and HRIS systems.
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
