The Collections Assistant is a part-time role responsible for supporting the management, care, and documentation of the museum’s collection. This position is critical to preserving the museum's artifacts and ensuring their accessibility for exhibitions, research, and educational purposes.
Key Responsibilities:
Collection Management:
- Assist in the cataloging, inventory, and documentation of the museum’s collection using the collections management system.
- Conduct condition reports and assist with preventive conservation tasks, including proper handling, storage, and environmental monitoring of artifacts.
- Help organize and maintain storage areas to ensure proper artifact preservation.
- Facilitate the movement and tracking of artifacts for exhibitions, loans, and storage.
Research and Documentation:
- Conduct research on artifacts to enhance catalog records, support exhibitions, and contribute to educational programs.
- Assist in the preparation of artifact labels, interpretive materials, and reports as needed.
Exhibition Support:
- Assist in the preparation, installation, and deinstallation of exhibitions.
- Provide support for the safe transport and handling of artifacts during setup.
Museum Operations:
- Assist with responding to inquiries about the collection from researchers, staff, and the public.
- Support the implementation of policies and procedures for collections care in alignment with museum standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or working toward a degree) in Museum Studies, History, Art History, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of museum collections management practices and standards.
- Experience with collections management systems (e.g., PastPerfect, TMS, or similar) preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle artifacts safely and follow conservation guidelines.
- Basic research and writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a museum, gallery, or archival setting.
- Familiarity with preventive conservation and artifact handling best practices.
- Basic knowledge of materials commonly found in historical collections.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work in storage areas, which may involve bending, stooping, and climbing ladders.
