Description
Hofstra University seeks a visionary leader to build and shape the strategic direction of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) as part of the Hofstra Strategic Plan. The Director (appointment will be as Director or Executive Director commensurate with the experience of the successful candidate) will play a pivotal role in enhancing faculty development, promoting inclusive and evidence-based teaching practices, and advancing student learning. This position offers an exciting opportunity to craft the Center’s mission and initiatives, ensuring that Hofstra remains at the forefront of innovative and learner-centered pedagogy.
As the leader of the CTL, the Director will collaborate with faculty and academic leadership to cultivate a culture of teaching excellence, partnering with our existing EdTech Division to integrate emerging educational technologies—including artificial intelligence (AI)—to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. For candidates with a faculty background, a faculty appointment may be negotiated as part of the position. While a tenured faculty rank is not required, familiarity with faculty perspectives and academic leadership will be highly valuable.

Strategic Leadership and Administration
- Leads the revitalization of the Center for Teaching and Learning, setting its strategic plan, mission, priorities, and long-term goals.
- Develops and administers programs that support pedagogical innovation and faculty excellence.
- Manages the CTL’s budget, personnel, and resources to ensure effective operations and sustainable growth.
- Builds partnerships across the university to embed best practices in Teaching and Learning throughout all disciplines.
Faculty Development and Support
- Designs, implements, and evaluates faculty development programs, workshops, and consultations focused on inclusive and equitable pedagogy, course design, and assessment.
- Facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations and communities of practice among faculty.
- Serves as a resource for faculty in areas such as curriculum development, instructional innovation, assessment, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Educational Innovation and Technology
- Promotes innovative and research-based approaches to face-to-face, online, and hybrid instructional modalities.
- Leads efforts to integrate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, into teaching and learning in collaboration with ITS, EdTech and academic units.
Teaching, Scholarship, and Assessment
- Establishes a record of scholarly excellence in Teaching and Learning, education, rhetoric and composition, STEM learning or a related field.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of faculty development initiatives and their impact on student learning.
- Stays informed on national trends in higher education, pedagogy, and faculty development.
- Supports faculty engagement in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and contributes to institutional research on student success and retention.
- Teaches up to one course per semester (optional).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an academic discipline required.
- 3 – 5 years of related experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting, with a record of developing innovative faculty support programs including instructional design and delivery.
- Expertise in evidence-based teaching practices, curriculum design, and instructional technology.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with faculty, administrators, and academic units.
- Commitment to supporting equitable and inclusive teaching and learning environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- A background in leading faculty development initiatives or directing a teaching and learning center preferred.
- Expertise in teaching innovations including, but not limited to: AI applications in education, civic engagement, problem-based learning, and other high-impact educational practices.
- A track record in SoTL research and experience securing external funding for relevant initiatives.

$140,000 - $175,000

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
- Salary ranges indicated for positions covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement are in accordance with the CBA.
