Wheel Refinishing Technician
Tire Trac — Detroit’s leading tire retail and service center — is seeking a skilled professional to join our team in a specialized repair and restoration role.
Position Overview
The Wheel Refinishing Technician is responsible for diagnosing and repairing a range of wheel damage, ensuring vehicles meet safety and performance standards. This role involves detailed surface preparation, cosmetic refinishing, and structural repair work on alloy and steel wheels. You’ll operate a variety of equipment, including spray systems, power tools, and wheel balancing machinery, to restore wheels to OEM specifications. Additionally, you’ll assist with tire-related services to support overall vehicle performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough inspections to assess wheel damage (e.g., curb rash, oxidation, gouges, bends) and recommend repair solutions
- Perform precision refinishing, including sanding, prepping, color matching, painting, and polishing wheels
- Straighten and true bent wheels to restore proper balance and alignment
- Execute tire services such as mounting, balancing, rotations, and flat repairs
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work environment
- Utilize diagnostic tools to verify wheel balance and vehicle performance post-repair
- Document work completed and communicate repair details with service advisors or customers when needed
- Support shop operations with additional tasks as required
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Automotive painting, collision repair training, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred
- Strong understanding of wheel materials (aluminum, alloy, steel) and refinishing processes
- Proficiency in using pneumatic tools, power sanders, spray equipment, and balancing machines
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and repair instructions
- Excellent visual acuity, including color differentiation, depth perception, and attention to detail
- Basic computer literacy for documentation and service tracking
- Physical ability to stand, bend, kneel, and lift 50 lbs consistently

While carrying out the responsibilities of this job, the employee will regularly encounter moving mechanical parts. There may be occasional exposure to extreme cold and heat, and the noise level in the workplace is moderately loud. The employee should be physically capable of frequently lifting and carrying heavy tires, often weighing up to 75 pounds, requiring good strength in the back, shoulders, and legs, along with the ability to stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, and reach, while maintaining good balance and dexterity to perform tasks like mounting and dismounting tires; good vision and depth perception are also essential for accurate tire inspections and alignment checks.
