Description:
The Purchasing Lead oversees all purchasing activities, ensuring the timely and cost-effective procurement of goods, materials, and services needed by the company. This role involves managing supplier relationships, negotiating contracts, and maintaining inventory levels to support production and operational needs. The Purchasing Lead will also develop purchasing strategies, manage budgets, and lead a team of purchasing professionals to achieve company goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Procurement Strategy and Management:
- Develop, implement, and oversee purchasing policies and strategies to ensure consistent supply and optimal pricing.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to align purchasing activities with business needs and production schedules.
- Continuously evaluate and improve procurement processes for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Supplier Relationship Management:
- Identify and qualify potential suppliers and maintain strong, productive relationships with existing ones.
- Negotiate terms, contracts, and pricing with suppliers to ensure favorable agreements and risk management.
- Monitor supplier performance regularly to ensure they meet quality, delivery, and cost standards.
- Contract and Compliance Management:
- Manage and oversee all supplier contracts, ensuring they are compliant with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all purchasing activities align with company ethical standards, sustainability goals, and industry regulations.
- Handle dispute resolutions with suppliers and negotiate contract adjustments as necessary.
- Inventory and Cost Control:
- Maintain optimal inventory levels to support business needs without incurring excess costs.
- Track and manage the purchasing budget, identifying cost-saving opportunities and reducing spend where possible.
- Analyze data and market trends to make informed purchasing decisions and forecast material needs.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of purchasing agents, buyers, and coordinators.
- Set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance reviews.
- Foster a collaborative and efficient work environment focused on continuous improvement and professional growth.
- Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Prepare and present regular reports on purchasing metrics, cost savings, and supplier performance.
- Use data to drive decision-making and improve purchasing strategies and supplier performance.
- Analyze trends in market prices, lead times, and other factors that may impact purchasing activities.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Business finance, or relevant certifications (e.g., CPM, CPSM, CPP) preferred.
- 5 years of experience in purchasing or procurement, with at least 2 years in a managerial role preferred.
- Proven track record in contract negotiation, supplier management, and cost control.
- Strong working proficiency in SAP preferred.
- Understanding various other ERP/MRP systems and purchasing software will be very helpful.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team, work collaboratively, and solve complex problems.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Individuals may need to sit, walk, or stand for extended periods.
- The position may require reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist, or lifting up to 50 pounds. Proper lifting techniques are required.
- While typically in an office environment, the performance of this position will require exposure to manufacturing areas where the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses with side shields, is required.
- This role will require occasional travel to suppliers and industry events; regular business travel will occur once or twice per month, while overnight travel can occur once or twice a quarter.
