QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: minimum of matriculation in an Applied Behavior Analysis Master’s Degree program. Preferred completion of Applied Behavior Analysis Master’s Degree.
- Required: One year experience working with children with significant behavioral and learning challenges.
- Preferred: Experience working in a hospital and interdisciplinary setting.
JOB SUMMARY
- The BAA (Behavior Analyst Assistant) is responsible for behavior intervention plan development, data collection, and implementation for patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder on the Autism Inpatient Units, under the direct supervision of a licensed BCBA or clinical psychologist. He/she is responsible for training direct care staff in the implementation of behavior intervention programs and supporting skill development. The BAA also facilitates parent training in the behavior plan to support generalization of skills to the home setting.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Job requires standing occasionally for brief (15-30min) periods. Job mostly sedentary, sitting at a desk functions or at meetings up to but usually no greater than 120 minutes at a time. Job involves carrying of documents, books, chairs or small equipment (i.e. audiovisual) items. Reaching and bending is as related to accessing file drawers and shelves for documents, positions would be sustained for no greater than 15 minutes. Fine manipulation is required as related to writing, graphing or computer usage. Safety Care certification and participation in hands on safety interventions is also required.
COGNITIVE DEMANDS
- Position requires independent problem identification, abstract reasoning, and adaptability. Quick decision making on issues with significant organizational impact is required. A very high degree of selective attention, discernment, perception and/or concentration is necessary.
- Position requires a high degree of writing proficiency including attention to detail, adherence to all elements of style and ability to postulate. A working knowledge of and familiarity with medical terminology and definitions is required
- Position requires a high level of communication skill including expression of abstract/ complex ideas, use of negotiation and active listening and an ability to dialogue with multiple parties. Must be able to coach and assess skills of staff members.
- Position requires a high degree of reading and auditory comprehension of abstractions and an ability to make inferences. A working knowledge and familiarity with medical terminology and definitions is required. A working knowledge and familiarity with professional/medical documentation as necessary.
WORK DEMANDS
- Employees in this position work in a behavioral management setting under stressful conditions associated with care of impaired, aggressive, and sometimes, self-injurious individuals. Employees are expected to utilize de-escalation techniques taught by the Hospital to minimize need for physical intervention. They must have the ability to remain calm during a crisis situation as evidenced by the ability to make quick rational decisions and prioritize immediate patient care needs to maintain a therapeutic environment and ensure safety
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- In consultation with and directly supervised by the licensed clinician, review clinical information and direct observations of patients to write brief behavioral plans and interventions appropriate to the acute hospital setting. Document the initial plan and any plan updates in a timely and efficient manner, with input from the supervising clinician incorporated.
- Develop data collection systems and monitors data collected, analyzing behavior patterns to make changes to the BIP (behavior intervention plan) and to help inform overall treatment decisions in collaboration with the leadership team.
- Attend rounds meetings with interdisciplinary team as assigned to review interventions and data and to receive feedback on next steps.
- Completes concise documentation in the medical record in a timely manner and in keeping with, internal policy and professional standards.
- Provide training to direct care staff in implementation of the patient’s specific behavioral plan, with a focus on competency development.
- Leads parent/guardian training sessions as assigned to promote generalization of skills across environments.
- Collaborates with providers to gather history and support continuity of care as assigned by the supervising BCBA or Clinical Psychologist.
- Develop/maintain an understanding of the patient’s culture, traditions, values, beliefs that relate to health care and to decision making.
- Seek supervision and input proactively and consistently from the licensed clinician. Attend scheduled supervision meetings prepared to review written work and clinical information. Recognize and operate within the professional boundaries and competencies appropriate to the role and level of expertise, deferring to and collaborating with other interdisciplinary team members appropriate to their areas of expertise.
- Demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills with a high degree of independence. Complete other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor that are consistent with the responsibilities of the position.
