What are the responsibilities and job description for the On-Call or Project Hire Biologist, San Joaquin Valley position at HT HARVEY & ASSOCIATE?
H. T. Harvey & Associates, a California-based ecological consulting firm, is looking for on-call biologists with experience in construction monitoring and blunt-nosed leopard surveys for projects in Fresno, Tulare, and Kern counties. The anticipated pay range for this position is $31.50 per hour to $46.25 per hour (plus mileage and per diem expenses, as applicable). Actual compensation within the range will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Working with Our Team
Our regional team leaders have unparalleled expertise with species, habitats, regulatory environment, and habitat plans of the region. The successful candidates will work with experienced senior ecologists as part of a collaborative project team to support environmental compliance for transportation and renewable energy projects. New team members receive formal specialized training as well as ongoing mentorship within their project teams.
The initial need is seasonal work between April and September, with opportunities for both part- or full-time schedules (M–F, and potentially weekends). The minimum commitment is 2 days/week for a 4-week duration. Depending on candidates’ availability and experience, additional project work may be available.
Desired Competencies, Skills, and Experience
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in biological studies, natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or an equivalent subject. Or equivalent demonstrable background in ecology and broad knowledge of the biology of desert fauna.
- Prior experience with construction monitoring
- Prior experience with blunt-nosed leopard lizard (BNLL) surveying and/or monitoring
- Attention to detail
- A collaborative approach to work and communication

A Few Other Nitty Gritty Details
While the logistics of project will differ, and will be discussed in advance of each work assignment, these are typical aspects of the current available roles:
- A typical work day will include up to 6 hours in the field plus travel time
- Pre-approved travel time to and from the project site will be billable up to 190 miles
- Per diem, mileage, and/or accommodation costs may be paid depending on where the new team members are based, agreed-upon in advance of work, and based on client contract provisions.
- This position requires the future employee to:
- Conduct field work and follow best practices for field safety
- Hold a valid driver’s license with no major traffic violations or multiple minor violations
- Walk over varied terrain for surveys and work in inclement weather
- Ability to travel within the region for fieldwork
