MICROCOMPUTER SPECIALIST (Schools)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is a technical position focused on adapting microcomputers to department and user needs. Working with various departments as needed, the incumbent works from problem definition to implementation and support for the system designed. The 'work includes the application of both hardware and software to meet the specific needs of the department. Work is performed under the general supervision of the School Superintendent with wide leeway allowed for planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision over the work of others is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES.
Collects information from the department requesting computer support to determine current operation and identifying the basic requirements;
Defines and researches the problem in terms of conditions, logical relationships, system constraints, compatibility requirements, basic objectives, related manual processes, space, impact on resources, etc.;
Designs the system for department use by specifying hardware, software, files, screens, interactive programs, batch programs, macros, etc.;
Demonstrates and trains users in the operation and maintenance of computer hardware and software and computer networks, including Internet access;
Researches, tests, evaluates and recommends data communication hardware and software; Consults with vendors, distributors, and users regarding the purchase of computer hardware, software and networks;
Integrates new system into the current hardware/software systems and manual/paper systems in use;
Develops appropriate tests to assure the system's reliability;
Assembles and installs microcomputer systems including connection of central processing unit with all peripheral equipment such as printers, displays, and external disk drives;
Installs hardware and peripheral components, loads software packages, such as operating systems, word processing, or spreadsheet program into computer;
Provides support and assistance to individuals and groups using the network;
Installs and upgrades software packages to work stations;
Loads operating system software and batch programs;
Tests and adjusts software during parallel operation with the current system;
Develops and documents operational procedures;
Trains staff in use of word processing, database, spread sheet, utility and other software;
Maintains a library of manuals, documentation, publication, etc.. maintains inventory data; Prepares operation manuals for users, and other written materials such as memoranda, progress reports and proposals;
Assigns computer passwords to school district staff;
Creates user accounts;
Maintains the web filter;
Network share access to support microcomputers;
Plans, coordinates and implements security measures, resolves computer problems;
Responds to user problems and questions on system and software operational problems.

CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the principles, techniques and concepts utilized in microcomputer system analysis;
Good knowledge of microcomputer capacities, programming principles, techniques, concepts and related product technology;
Good knowledge of logical operations of micro-computers and data communication devices;
Good knowledge of the operation and utilization of word processing equipment;
Good knowledge of office terminology and procedures;
Good knowledge of principles and practices of office automation;
Ability to define and recommend micro-computer hardware and software;
Ability to detect and resolve micro-computer breakdowns and problems;
Ability to perform close detail work;
Ability to train others in the operation of microcomputer and word processing equipment;
Ability to prepare written material such as documentation for programs and system configuration, memoranda, progress reports and proposals and cost estimates;

MINIMUM UALIFICATIONS: Either:
- Graduation from a New York State registered two-year college university with an
Associates Degree in computer science or a closely related field; OR
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years of full-time paid experience in personal computer system analysis and/or adapting software fòr users; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
