Job Description
Reporting to the Environmental Health Manager, the Environmental Health Specialist, implements, coordinates the hazardous building materials program.
This position is open to classified or non-classified employees of Idaho State University as a promotional opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts asbestos and lead sampling for construction projects
- Coordinates hazardous building materials building surveys
- Supports Operations and Maintenance work in units by developing guidance and reviewing work processes
- Oversees asbestos abatement work and and other remediation programs
- Assist with industrial hygiene programs including exposure monitoring, indoor air quality investigations, sampling and equipment calibration
- Provide and document training
- Utilize continuous improvement principles in all EHSS responsibilities
- Cultivate a positive culture of safety by role modeling safe behavior and a demonstrated commitment to safety
- Respond to off-hours emergencies
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of experience with environmental health and safety programs, in lieu of a bachelor’s degree, at least six (6) years of training and experience in environmental health and safety programs
- Ability to interpret laws and regulations to assist with University compliance
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in unusual or new situations
- Strong communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information
- Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with environmental health and safety in a college or university setting
- Asbestos Inspector Certification
- Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor Certification
- Ability to read construction plans
Additional Information

Salary will be between $55,000 - $65,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
