Position Summary/Objectives
The primary role of the Claim Technical Specialist is to investigate, evaluate, negotiate and settle serious injury/damage claims involving moderate to large exposures in multiple jurisdictions, applying coverage, laws and regulations accordingly; reporting to management and reinsurers within necessary timelines and guidelines.
Position Responsibilities Including
- Promptly review new losses and determine initial plans of action.
- Analyze coverage as it relates to the facts and allegations of claims; prepare Reservation of Rights and Declination of Coverage letters, as applicable.
- Initiate contact with policyholder and claimant(s) to confirm notice of loss description and determine the scope of the investigation, as appropriate.
- When appropriate, assign and instruct independent adjusting firms to conduct needed investigative tasks; manage and direct activity of independent adjusting firms in any continued investigation of claims.
- Report losses timely to management, reinsurers and update each as necessary.
- Evaluate claims as investigations develop and establish and adjust reserves as warranted.
- Review expense bills for appropriateness, accuracy and adherence to Company billing guidelines and process payments.
- Recognize, notify and pursue culpable parties and seek contributions from such parties.
- Identify and ensure subrogation efforts are undertaken against responsible parties.
- Direct counsel in the defense of litigated claims in accordance with established litigation plans and legal budgets.
- Negotiation of claims to settlement, attend mediations, settlement conferences and trials.
- Mentor Claim Examiner trainees and new Claim Examiners.
- Other duties as required.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to deal with significant/complex coverage matters, including contractual risk transfer and additional insured issues.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Exhibit negotiation, critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
- Outstanding customer service, attention to detail and multi-tasking skills.
- Strong computer skills, including the ability to work effectively in the claims management system and strong knowledge of Microsoft applications (e,g., Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Ability to exercise independent judgment with moderate supervision in handling claims within reserve and settlement authority.
- Ability to travel as business requires (including for mediations, settlement conferences and trials).
- Required: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university.
- Required: Minimum of 4 years of property/casualty claims handling as a full-time exempt employee of a U.S. based property/casualty insurance company.
- Required: Substantial commercial general liability experience.
- Highly Preferred: 5 years of commercial property/casualty claims handling experience, including experience with complex litigation of claims.
- Highly Preferred: 3 years of litigation management experience.
- Preferred: Experience with Excess & Surplus Lines (E&S).
- A Plus: Senior Claim Law Associate (SCLA), Casualty Claim Law Associate (CCLA), Associate in Claims (AIC) and/or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designations.
- Required: A valid adjuster license in designated home state and the ability to obtain additional non-residential adjuster licenses.
- Physical demands are considered to be that of a climate-controlled office environment, with minimal physical exertion.
- Position is hybrid and requires the ability and the willingness to work in an IFG Companies' office at least three (3) days per week.
- Position requires prolonged sitting, extensive utilization of computers and interactions with others in person and via phone.
- Position requires the ability and the willingness to travel as the business needs.
