Job Description

The Field Chief Technology Officer (Field CTO) is a strategic leadership role responsible for driving the vision, securing business outcomes/value realisation, and leading the customer’s transformation strategy from top down. The role will also be overseeing the technical direction, innovation, and establish the bridge between strategy and delivery.

Leading a transformation journey as a Field CTO involves driving the governance and technical aspects of the transformation and ensuring that the customer is well-positioned to embrace and leverage the new way of working.

The Field CTO plays a crucial role in shaping and driving the customer’s transformation journey, driving innovation, and ensuring that the governance and technology initiatives align with their business objectives. This role requires continuous monitoring, measuring, and adjusting to keep the core team aligned and focused within a customer’s ever-changing landscape.

The Field CTO will work closely with IFS Sales Team on driving the joint strategy and IFS GCS to oversee execution. The Field CTO will primarily be engaged in the field with the customer, leading the IFS core team in collaboration with the customer to achieve a joint outcome. The Field CTO will typically be focused on 1-2 Customers, with additional advisory required on an as needed basis.

The Field CTO will take full ownership of the Customer’s Transformation journey, which will require:

  • Strategic ownership of the Transformation journey consisting of implementing a new Operating Model and driving an Evergreen strategy.
  • Develop and drive the technology strategy and roadmap.
  • Stay updated on industry advancements and best practices to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of technology.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in alignment with the Customers Evergreen strategy focusing on the Customer and the Core Team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical strategies with business goals and objectives.
  • Confident and able to drive renewal process and engagement required to secure all sources of recurring revenue. Communicate and work closely with sales on upsell and cross-sell opportunities.
  • Use the strategic knowledge to identify opportunities to create value for the customer. Liaise with the Customer Success Manager in order to ensure opportunities are reflected accurately in the success plan, and delivered in accordance with the expectations set.
  • Support and mentor the Core Team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
  • Engage with customers, partners, and industry stakeholders to understand their needs, challenges, and emerging trends.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external partners, vendors to stay informed about industry advancements and potential collaboration opportunities.
  • Collaborate with project managers and technical leads to define project scopes, objectives, and deliverables.
  • Monitor project progress, manage risks, and adjust as necessary to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Foster collaboration and effective communication across the Core Team and the Customer to drive alignment and successful execution of technical initiatives.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts and strategies to non-technical stakeholders, including executives and board members.
  • Establish and enforce technology governance frameworks, policies, and procedures.
  • Drive an obsession with customer value and business excellence across the IFS teams.
  • Management sponsor on the removal of obstacles to our success.
  • Driving communications across your business, within the Customer environment and towards IFS.
  • A solid understanding of business principles and the ability to connect technology initiatives to the organization's goals and financial objectives are necessary.
  • Should be innovative, open to new ideas, and willing to explore and experiment with emerging technologies. They should also possess adaptability to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry and effectively navigate through change.
  • Should be a proactive problem-solver, capable of balancing technical feasibility, business impact, and resource constraints to reach optimal solutions.

Technical Expertise: A Field CTO should possess technical knowledge and expertise across enterprise software solutions within a defined industry. The role should have an understanding of the IFS technologies, trends, and emerging developments within the specific industry. This expertise enables the Field CTO to provide valuable insights, guide technical decision-making, and stay ahead of the curve.

Strategic Thinking: A Field CTO must possess strong strategic thinking skills. They should be able to align technical strategies with the overall business objectives of the customer. This involves understanding the market landscape, identifying opportunities, and developing technology roadmaps that drive innovation and growth.

Stakeholder Management: Proactively working with the C-Suite and senior stakeholders at the customer to provide guidance on strategic topics; ultimately earning a seat at the table in relevant executive discussions and working as a trusted advisor. Empathizing with customer stakeholders to understand their point-of-view and experience. Support development of customer relationship map

Leadership: Leadership skills are crucial, as the role need to inspire and motivate both the Customer and IFS core team, foster collaboration, and create a culture of innovation. Effective communication, mentoring, and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels are essential for successful leadership.

Commercial Acumen: Commercial acumen, ability to negotiate and create opportunities for IFS as well as demonstrate value to the customer. Showcase and articulate IFS product benefits. Confident and able to drive renewal process and engagement required to secure all sources of recurring revenue. Communicate and work closely with sales on upsell and cross-sell opportunities.

Business Acumen: While being technically proficient, a Field CTO should also have a solid understanding of business principles and governance. The role needs to be able to translate technical concepts into business value, articulate ROI for technology investments, and make informed decisions that align with the customer’s vision and strategy.

Customer Focus: A Field CTO should be customer-centric and have a deep understanding of customer needs and pain points. By actively engaging with customers and understanding their challenges, the CTO can guide the development of solutions that meet those needs and create a competitive advantage for the customer.

Adaptability and Learning Agility: The technology landscape is constantly evolving therefore a Field CTO must be adaptable and willing to learn. The role should embrace change, keep up with IFS strategy, emerging trends, and continuously upgrade skills and knowledge to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.

Collaboration and Relationship Building: Collaboration is key for a Field CTO, as the role often work closely with various stakeholders within IFS and the Customer, including executives, partners consultants, engineers, product managers and the core delivery team. Building strong relationships and fostering effective collaboration across teams and business units is essential for driving successful outcomes.

Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Field CTOs should possess strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities. They need to analyse complex technical challenges, evaluate potential solutions, and make informed decisions that balance technical feasibility, business impact, and resource constraints.

Required Education & Experience

Essential:

  • Significant practical and management experience in the enterprise software industry, ideally in a services/sales context – leading candidates will demonstrate a wide range of experience within a software services setting.
  • Commercial solutioning experience (envisaging, defining, scoping, scaling services offerings)
  • Can readily discuss practical examples of unlocking customer value in a business context, in an impactful and relevant way (benchmarked, proven value)
  • Should have a significant amount of experience in technical roles within the industry. Several years of hands-on technical experience are expected to develop a deep understanding of the technologies and challenges relevant to the field.
  • As a CTO, leadership and management experience is crucial. Experience in leading cross-functional teams, managing budgets, and overseeing complex projects is highly valuable.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of key industry trends in their chosen field
  • Will be required to demonstrate a mature understanding of commercial topics and financial drivers for a Customer and IFS

Desirable:

  • Bachelor's Degree: A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, engineering, or information technology.
