- Summary of Role: As a certified sports medicine professional, you will ensure the wellbeing of student athletes and individuals engaged in physical activities. Working under the direction of a physician, your expertise will focus on injury prevention, evaluation and management, emergencies, rehabilitation, and ensuring a prompt and safe return to play. Your responsibilities will include providing athletic training services to high school and junior high school athletics at partnered schools.
- Education, License & Certification: The ideal candidate should possess at least a bachelor's or master's degree from a CAATE accredited program and be certified by the BOC, maintaining a good standing. Current licensure in the state of primary practice is a requirement, while holding dual licensure in New York and Pennsylvania is highly desirable. A valid BLS certification for professionals is mandatory.
- Experience: Prior experience working with adolescent athletes is preferred.
- Key Responsibilities: Exhibit a professional image and attitude when interacting with patients, families, clients, athletic directors, coaches, colleagues, and others. Provide exceptional care to athletes/patients, including preventive measures, immediate care, assessment, rehabilitation, referrals, and communication with healthcare providers. Monitor athletic activities and events for safety hazards or unsafe practices, promptly reporting concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Collaborate with athletic directors and coaches to develop effective training and conditioning programs for student athletes.
- Conduct initial assessments and administer care for emergent, acute, and chronic sports-related injuries and illnesses. Determine if further medical attention is necessary and communicate effectively with school officials and parents/guardians regarding injuries, care provided, and recommended courses of action. Cooperate closely with the Medical Director/physician(s)/provider(s) to treat and rehabilitate injured student athletes, devising personalized treatment plans and recommending therapy referrals when required.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the athlete's electronic medical record, detailing health status, injuries, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, and encounters. Utilize Presagia EMR software to record injuries, treatment, and encounter status for all student athletes, both home and away. Collect demographic information, team/sport participation, and grade at the beginning of each sports season. Ensure that all athlete injuries are documented within 24 hours, recording relevant details such as date, time, body part affected, severity, mechanism of injury, and location. Thoroughly document initial assessments with a note type of "Initial Injury Assessment," including history, observation, palpation, range of motion, muscle strength, neurological evaluation, special tests, and differential diagnosis.
- Offer guidance on return-to-play protocols to athletes, coaches, and parents/guardians under the supervision of the Medical Director/physician/provider. Maintain regular communication with the Medical Director and consult with them regarding referrals for additional services. Participate in continuing education and professional development activities, attending/presenting at departmental in-service sessions and external growth opportunities in order to share knowledge with the team.
- Adhere to federal and state guidelines, professional organizations' policies, facility policies, and relevant professional codes. Familiarize yourself with the contents of the employee handbook, unit Policy & Procedure guidelines, and organizational policies, acting accordingly in your role.
