Title : Nutrition Services Supervisor

Summary : Collaborates with the Coordinator of Nutrition Services to provide leadership and oversight for the USDA federal child nutrition program encompassing 35 school sites, driving operational excellence and program compliance. Plays a key role in developing and executing departmental strategic initiatives, ensuring program integrity and effective program delivery across all locations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition, Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Service Management, Hospitality Management, or a related field. Registered Dietitian (RD) credential preferred.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible management experience in a large-scale, multi-unit food service operation, with a proven track record of success in procurement of perishable goods within budgetary constraints.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets for food and supplies, maintaining nutritional integrity, and ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal child nutrition regulations and policies. Procurement practices must ensure all food items qualify for federal and state meal reimbursement.
  • Extensive experience overseeing a large, cost-effective food service operation, including food and ingredient purchasing and control, standardized recipe development and implementation, inventory management, warehouse operations, order / delivery scheduling and logistics, cost analysis (unit, case, and landed), and efficient handling and shipping practices.
  • Proficiency with food service management software, nutrition analysis software, and other relevant technology.
  • Experience with purchasing / bidding procedures for food, supplies, and equipment, in accordance with state and federal procurement regulations. Ability to prepare bid specifications, solicit quotes, and prepare board exhibits following district procedures.
  • Current certification as a School Nutrition Specialist (SNS), Minnesota Department of Health Food Manager, and ServSafe Manager, or ability to obtain all three certifications within the first year of employment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of best practices, policies, procedures, and methods for high-quality, high-volume food service operations, including systems management, dietary guidelines, and child nutrition programs.
  • Exceptional organizational, management, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively resolve operational challenges. Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, organize, and delegate tasks to staff.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Responsibility

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations governing school nutrition programs, including health and nutrition standards, dietary guidelines, sanitation, safety protocols, and reporting requirements.
  • Prioritizes the department's mission of serving nutritious and appealing meals prepared using efficient cooking methods within an institutional setting when making operational decisions.
  • Manages the financial aspects of an $11 million district-wide food purchasing program, including USDA commodities, ensuring adherence to all applicable laws and regulations, and developing menus that meet current nutrition standards for federal and state reimbursement.
  • Manages the procurement process, including identifying, sourcing, and competitively bidding on groceries and commodities to meet federal regulations and departmental budget goals.
  • Oversees the food and supply inventory database, including USDA commodities and perishable items, for the district warehouse. Manages sourcing, receiving, warehousing, and order fulfillment for school sites.
  • Manages commodity orders, tracking, and receipt of products.
  • Develops and implements written procedures for maintaining food production inventory records, inventory valuation, accounting for returns, and accurate payment using food management software. Trains and supervises site managers on system usage.
  • Directly supervises the maintenance and updates of inventory and menu software programs.
  • Fosters a positive and collaborative work environment, demonstrating respect and professionalism towards colleagues, students, building staff, and stakeholders.
  • Creates and plans menus and special meal accommodations for students with allergies, medical conditions, and autoimmune responses, adhering to ADA regulations.
  • Assesses and calculates nutritional adequacy using nutrient analysis software.
  • Develops and implements a procedure for special diet orders, collaborating with parents, students, food service managers, school nurses, principals, and school teams to create menus based on medical documentation and needs.
  • Evaluates customer food preferences, industry trends, and current research to plan menus that encourage participation in child nutrition programs. Conducts student focus groups to assess food product acceptance and quality while adhering to USDA nutritional guidelines.
  • Ensures all school sites have adequate and functional kitchen equipment, food, and supplies to support established menus.
  • Provides regular on-site guidance and supervision to school sites and provides input to the Coordinator of Nutrition Services for site manager evaluations.
  • Trains and mentors nutrition services staff. Serves as a nutrition resource for District 196.
  • Assists the Coordinator of Nutrition Services in developing and maintaining the annual food and equipment budget.
  • Collaborates and interacts with other District 196 departments to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Provides professional development and career exploration opportunities in FACS, food and hospitality classes, and other relevant classroom settings.
  • Promotes and supports Farm to School initiatives and community partnerships to improve food quality and student health.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive nutrition education program, utilizing school cafeterias as learning labs. Serves as the district's nutrition expert in developing and presenting nutrition education materials and activities, including National School Lunch and Breakfast Weeks.
  • Serves as a nutrition services operations expert / preceptor for college and university students.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to the Elementary and Secondary menu committees, ensuring the achievement of measurable outcomes. Oversees marketing and merchandising programs.
  • Stays current on food and nutrition trends, particularly in child nutrition. Represents the department at conferences, speaking engagements, and through publications.
  • Assists in pricing district-wide catering functions and developing written catering menus, brochures, and contracts.
