Indian Trails Public Library District (ITPLD) has an exciting opportunity for an ESL
Instructor to work in a dynamic workplace focusing on guiding our adult English language
learners toward gaining knowledge and skills to increase English proficiency in listening,
speaking, reading and writing as well as fostering an understanding of U.S. culture. The
ideal candidate will be positive, resourceful, technology savvy, collaborative and
knowledgeable to provide engaging services for our members. This position involves
delivering lesson plans to adult ESL students, staffing the ESL Lab to assist students with
their English learning needs and working with a team of staff and volunteers to support
ESL Services.
ESL Instructor Responsibilities:
- Delivering lesson plans to adults 18 and over in a class/group setting utilizing a broad
of communication that develop each student’s English proficiency in listening, speaking,
reading and writing as well as fostering an understanding of U.S. culture.
- Assist the ESL Librarian in administering language assessments for the purpose
in language acquisition.
- Work regular shifts in the ESL Lab to assist students with their English learning needs,
Lab facility and resources including public computers, print materials, online resources
and board games.
- Assist the ESL Librarian in providing direction to volunteers who assist members in the
Service Desk & General Responsibilities
- Assist individuals of all ages to find information, locate materials and research a variety
- Recommend materials through a variety of sources.
- Assist with providing individual instruction and in the moment access to information in
- Assists members with a variety of technology support including but not limited to
printing, faxing and email.
- Contributes content for newsletters, brochures, instructions, etc. as requested.
- Actively promote the library, its materials, and services through programs, outreach,
- Stay current with all appropriate physical and digital literature, as well as emerging
- Assist with selection, ordering, and weeding as needed.
This opportunity requires:
- Bachelor’s Degree and TESOL certification (Teaching English to Speakers of Other
2 years relevant experience required.
- Superb customer service skills including the ability to maintain a calm and positive
- Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and age diverse public and staff, use
of a team.
- Ability to multitask, have attention to details, and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to use computers and relevant software (including but not limited to
- Ability to read computer screens; type accurately; and to move about service area easily;
various weights up to 50 pounds.
- Fluency in a second language desirable.
- Flexibility to be able to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Hourly rate of $21.33 - $24.00. This position is eligible for pro-rated vacation, sick time,
floating holiday hours, jury duty and bereavement time as well as eligible for the
employee assistance program (EAP), 457 retirement plan and mandatory participation
in the IMRF pension plan. In addition, eligible to apply for educational assistance after
1 year of employment. The library supports continued learning and professional growth
including job training for new employees.
